It is a water flow controller, designed to straighten the water flow into the propeller for better thrust. The photo Rob has just posted of the propeller lying on the dock bottom shows the deflector better (in the 'QE2 Minus Propellers' thread.

I recently read that topic, although I may have read it some years ago. Very interesting! Personally I've always been fond of the Admiralty/MOD test blue boot topping she had for a bit in the late 70s, early 80s that most people are not keen on.

Thomas - January 2009, QE2's different coloured boot-toppings were a significant subject for discussion in the earliest days of this website!

Is she definitely still federal grey?

Rob - please, what do you think...or is it too soon to tell?
I cant ever remember seeing the hull with so much of the dark blue about it...

Maybe someone knows one of the Paint Gang, perhaps there's a label on the tins!   ;) ;)

and, maybe someone knows whether it is mixed specially, and only for Cunard's own ships?

I hope she is.  I think the photo is misleading - even in the photo you posted above which is before the painting, she looks dark blue, so therefore I conclude she's still the correct colour.

Just had a look at QE2s new livery on another Instagram post it has Queen Elizabeth in English and Arabic it looks, if not bad then not right. Can't image they had an art designer on that one

Rosie, the sacrificial anodes are the white or metallic dots in a line along the hull near the bottom - see the photo in reply number 223.  The anodes, usually blocks of zinc, help reduce hull corrosion deterioration.  Without them the hull corrodes and with them the anodes corrode instead of the hull - thus making the anodes sacrificial.
In my limited experience protecting the metal bits on a wooden boat anodes generally last 2 to 3 years. They could be bolt on as are all ours, then they could be replaced by divers without dry docking.

I'm enjoying these progress photos. This is a new beginning for QE2 and so far (apart from the lifeboats) they seem to be retaining her significant features.

I really hope they make a great feature of her props - at least people will be able to see them for real then!

The logo looks tasteful too - although its still to be painted on and the stencil removed.

Plus the anodes give an indication they are at least looking after the parts you cant see!

Would like to see her stern though.......

 ;)

Oh dear, they were doing so well too!

It's because her stern is facing the marina, they're using it as a big billboard, basically...

In the style of the Dubai tourism logo as well, so will surely be used in plenty of advertising.

It does actually look like SOUTHAMPTON has been removed, after being there for over 50 years...

I don't know I quite like the stern it's a lot better than the livery on the main beam in my opinion.
