Photo in Post #190.

Looks like coolers & accumulators from Bow Thruster compartment.
Somewhere in my archives I have a photo or two.......
Nope - cannot find right now.

Skilly

Hi Skilly
These couldn't have been removed through the bow thrusters' 'windows / hatches' in the hull, could they - would they and 'the coolers' have been been easily accessible inside, through anywhere 'obvious in the hull - do you think? Wondering now about her fins too...
Short of yanking them all through past the ballast tanks etc - it's difficult to know what other access they have to the internal heavy stuff.
Trying to work out whether all this is a hook, line and sinker job,
if you'll pardon the pun - Sorryyyy!
Winking hard here!

Very best to you - hear it's been raining hard (NI)

I am enjoying seeing the photos of QE2 in Dry Dock and thinking it would be fantastic if we were allowed to use of couple of these in TQS 2019 Calendar.  Especially like the photo of the ship's bow taken from the front of the ship, which is the 5th photo in the instagram album

I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Hi Rob,
Looking up, closely at the photo of the anchor chain etc,
the overhang of the 'cowling' /'wind scoop' round the foot of the funnel is very much in evidence...
can you see what I mean..?
It must have been exposed when the Lifeboats were removed?
Just checked - it is the same on her port side too.

It's from when the funnel was rebuilt in 1986/7 as the whole unit got quite a bit wider to accommodate the larger exhaust stack underneath (had to exhaust/vent 9 diesels instead of 3 boilers among auxiliary systems). The scoop section was originally flush with the intakes and vents of the funnel base. Visible after 1986/7 on closer inspection of most photos (lifeboats or not although the lack of lifeboats makes this much more noticeable) and there are photos of the overhang up close on the same deck.

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

The bow thruster doors were welded shut in the 2009 drydock that prepared for Cape Town (probably due to the leaking seal on one and the bow thruster machinery problems generally, although they were not very useful anyway!). I would imagine the stabilisers were cut out from inside their compartments and hoisted/slid out before the opening was blanked off (as it has been) - we may yet find out in photos.

Dubai know what they're doing in this drydock partly as steps to keep her safe in the long term have been made so far and other steps are probably in progress.

Louis has just informed me that QE2 is leaving the Dubai World drydocks tomorrow.

Rosie,
The bow thruster tunnels are positioned directly under the fwd leg of the fwd cargo hold, so in the event of a thruster motor requiring rebuild, etc, it is just a simple vertical lift out the fwd hatch. This will be how the gear on the wharf was lifted out.

That seems quicker than originally planned however I guess if all works that require her out of the water are complete then the remainder can be completed either in wet dock at Dubai World or back at her permanent berth.

Hi Skilly - did QE2 have a dedicated bow thruster room? The Solstice Class cruise ship Howden supplied a turbo blower to 5yrs ago had all that equipment in a single compartment.

Her foredeck anchor mechanisms (not sure what they're called) will look odd now to be honest, although I hope they're not removed as well as they are part of her design and character... a blank/cleared/empty foredeck will be a shame.
So were the lifeboats & davits, the pools, & all sundry things they've been ripping out for months now,
o k, maybe carpets light fittings & etc would have been changed out at refit, as they are consumables.
Welding closed sea inlets & the like I can understand, the dry docking is to be welcomed especially if as rumoured it could be 40 years before it happens again??.
But, at what stage does it become unacceptable to remove things that are part of her design, & more especially character as mentioned above?.
In my humble opinion that stage has long been passed, all her chains laying scattered around the dockside
look like entrails, surely they don't need the space in a chain locker for any reason. It's just sad.
Will there be enough of her character left after all this ,I don't know, just have to wait & see, like Myles I won't be going any time soon to sample the delights.
This all sounds negative, not meant to be ,they are obviously spending money big time at last, QE2 deserves the opportunity after 10 years in limbo. She delivered for 40 years now the humans must.

This will need some getting used to, but I'm sure it will come out great.  :)
