QE2 and The Tall Ships
« on: Jan 16, 2010, 10:26 PM »
Did anyone see QE2 amongst The Tall Ships?
QE2 was at the start of several of the Races
Newcastle in 2005
Liverpool in 2008

This was a superb sight, a Tall Ship from Brazil, in Flamm, Norway
as we sailed down Aurlandsfjord together (2008)

It was 17 July 1995 and the cruise had been planned to have QE2 in South Queensferry to see the tall ships. Also that day HRH Princess Anne lunched on board at a SBAAT function (Scottish Business thingy). The helicopter brought a car out to the ship that was being auctioned and it was placed on the deck. Later that day QE2 led the Tall Ships out of the Firth of Forth.

The cruise was themed "North Cape Tall Ships Extravaganza" we sailed into Edinburgh on the 17th stayed overnight, the next day the QE2 led the Tall Ships out of the Firth of Forth.

some excellent piccies and videos, thanks for posting!

The joy of an overnight port stop as well, I never realised she had done this in the uk, what a thrill it would have been to have a night out in Edinburgh and asked a taxi driver to take you home to the QE2 !!!!

That's another thing I cannot imagine one of the current crop of cruise ships being asked to do! QE2 was really special... and I am sure she felt at home among the sea-going aristocracy of the Tall Ships, and they with her... :D

Unless (perish the thought  :-\  ) Cunard had to pay for the privilege..?

Very interesting that she stayed overnight -- presumably at anchor? That must have been a really special occasion... something that never happened while I was on board anyway...!

Louis, out of curiosity, was the US Coast Guard Eagle at this event?  She is stationed about 20 minutes from me in New London, CT.  She would have been easy to recognize with the diagonal stripes on her bow.

I have a print of this occasion that I picked up on eBay, showing QE2 with a tug steadying her bow, withthe Forth Railway Bridge in the background.  Little did I know, I would be on the ship in the same location some 5 years after I purchased the print.  It is hard to make out the artist, but it looks like it is John J. Halozas, but an internet search has not produced any results.  I will take a pic of the print.

No, the US Coast Guard Eagle was not at this event.

Not really QE2 related, but here are some photos of the Tall Ships from the 2005 race (from which I literally have the T-shirt!):

Lined up on Newcastle Quayside:

Approaching the start line, about 5 miles offshore:

Accompanying the [Cyrillic name] on the Newcastle-Gothenburg leg:

I have loads of shots of this event but don't want to overload the site!

Here's the print I got off eBay.

Sorry for the glare.  Does anyone else have this print or do you know who the artist is?

Hello Spoonraker1 and Welcome on board!

It's good that you have joined us!
Having taken so many photographs, it must have been quite hard work - however many films did you use?!
I wonder what you thought of that day - Were you able to sail out with the Tall Ships?
