Crew members from the 1980s
« on: Sep 01, 2009, 09:28 PM »
I suspect that most of the ex-QE2 members on this forum worked in the Hotel Dept but I am wondering if anyone remembers names from other departments?

I have fond memories of two Deck crew members, Digger (never knew his real name) and Arnie... big Jamaican guy, gentle giant type. Does anyone remember these guys?

Also some of the Engineering dept officers/crew... John Chillingworth, Dave Roberts, John Tomlinson, Martin Kay, Mick Earley, Brian Atkinson, Alan Goodwin, Paul Hammerton, Ben Waldron, 'Dixie' Deane, Dave Bogan, Jeff Arnold, Max Milton, John Speake, Mark Burrows.
Does anyone know these guys? What they're doing now?

Hi!

Recently on qV (Ssh!) it was possible to pass on messages about the Forum to colleagues of present day crew members, and ex-colleagues too.
I understood that there are several (at least) engineering and other technical crew members who are missing QE2 greatly.
A message about the Forum was passed on - and maybe some have joined already.

To date there appear to be no crew member(s) aboard who experienced QE2 and the Falklands
Hopefully they will post here soon, too!

Here's a couple of photos of the crew tug-o-war showing some of the engineers/deck crew. You might recognise a few:-

Every time I'm on the forum and see crew members mentioned, I always think "I should post the photo I took on the bridge" - so I am finally getting around to doing it; it is a scan so the quality is not that great.  Maybe of the crew members in the photo is a forum member!

Another memory which fellow crew members will also recognise.... the lingering taste of chloros (bleach) in the water drinking fountains.
Anyone else remember this? It wasn't always there, but you certainly knew it when it was present.

While I have not tasted that on QE2 (must have had an excellent filtering system for passengers) your post reminds me of the diesel fuel (DFM) we used to have in the water on the old aircraft carriers I was on (USS Forrestal and Saratoga) especially after refueling at sea.  You could actually see thin film of it on top of a glass of water.

Somebody mentioned about the QE2 and the Falklands
I have just been given this photograph which shows some of the Military Officers in the Queens Grill during their stay on the ship to and from the Ascension Islands. They are surrounded by the Queens Grill Waiting and Wine Steward staff who worked during the journey down with the troops. Can anyone spot any names? I know a couple of these (Jeremy Letherbarrow - steward, George Adamou - wine steward and Jonathan Norton- the hotel officer)

I am in there too, standing directly to the left of Major General Jeremy Thomson -  was working with 'Chinky Ward' on the southbound portion of that 'cruise'  Our station was right next to the radio room and we'd have been toast to an Exocet missile I am told.

I was the youngest member of crew on board, I even had to get written permission form my parents to go to the Falklands.  I was even presented with an Operation Broadsword poster that the Intelligence Corps had made.

Our 'punters' were Intelligence Corp, Gurkha Rifles Officers and for one evening the Senior SAS & SBS commanders

Hi Rich & the chaps

I am new on this forum of yours and have an interest in the good old QE2.
As a youth, in 1982, I served with the 12AD Royal Artillery Rapier Battery, so have a link to the Falklands 1982 job.
Today, I am a collector of medals, mainly Lincolnshire Regiment of WW1, but have gained another theme.
SAMs/SAM groups to all Naval, RFA, Civilian, Army, RAF, RM etc. in fact all that served during the FI conflict.

Today, I have the honour of adding a QE2 crew member SAM to my collection.
I was wondering if any of the people who served at that time have any knowledge of a chap who served as an engineer on board.
His name was J (James, I think!?) Wheat. I think he may well have been an aged member of the crew as I think he was born in Cheshire, in 1929. Sadly, now deceased, so I am told.
My quest is to build up a picture of the man, with details of his life, possibly anecdotes, photographs, and details of his service with the QE2 and other ships  that he has links to.
Any help would be most gratefully received.

From the point of view of a landlubber and foot soldier, when we saw the QE2, the first time I saw her she was off West Africa (I think getting kit/stores loaded up. I maybe wrong!) then later on around Ascension, she gave us a tremendous boost in morale. With many of us being young 18-20 year olds on our way to......well, not sure what! Not that it was low or anything.......but the reassurance of having a big friendly ship with us was something else.

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone knew Philip Robson who was a junior nav/deck officer on the CPrincess in 1983 then was transferred to QE2?  We lost touch when he left CP, and I did find out he did pass on young.?

Any info greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Phil Robson,
I certainly knew Phil well during my time on the Cunard Princess, in fact I have one of those dreadful photos of all the Navigating Officer taken at the time, with all of us looking dreadfully young.
I left Cunard Princess in May 1985 to take up a job as Trainee Pilot in New Zealand and lost touch with most of my friends from my days on the QE2 and Cunard Princess, with one exception Malcolm Scanlon who is alive and well and living in Canada. Sorry I cannot be of more help

Hello James there are members of the forum who sailed with the ship to the Falklands.  I hope there is someone who can answer your question. You may not get a response immediately as members do not log into the forum every day.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank
