QE2's Female Crew - work in progress
« on: Sep 05, 2021, 12:02 PM »
Work in Progress

The QE2 Story discussion forum has a male to female ratio of 5.3:1.  This made me think about how this compared to the ratio on QE2 and how the ratio and the roles of the female crew changed over the years.

I remember reading that when women were first appointed as assistant pursers on the Queen Elizabeth, in the 1940's the Captain said   "I'm glad to have them - but only as assistant pursers mind! I never dreamed that I should one day be sailing with women officers....."  They were know as LAP = Lady Assistant Purser; WAP = Woman Assistant Purser; FAP = Female Assistant Purser.

How things have changed over the years - I wonder what he would have thought of women Captains of ships such as Captain Inger Olsen.   Did the Equal Opportunities Act of 1974 and subsequent help women to climb the career ladder?

Which brings me to the work I am currently doing to list our female forum members who were QE2 crew. I have also listed the names of female crew who are not forum members, but they have been named in topics.

The list below is a combination of identifying female forum crew members, extracting information from topics and relevant information from Willum's list of crew mates

There is much more work to be done and with your help I hope we can add to this list.  Regarding the categories e.g. Medical,  Hotel Staff etc. I have had help identifying the Departments categories, but I realise that I my not get this 100% right the first time around, so I may need to make changes as the topic develops.

Maureen Ryan Assistant Purser and later Social Hostess

I remember Maureen telling us once that she joined Cunard as a 'Lady Purser', and that their uniforms were war time WRNS uniforms.

A couple of Female Deck Officers;

Emma ??  so tiny that she had to have a step to stand on to see out of the bridge windows on QE2. Excellent seaman though.

Becky ??, scouser who was 'head hunted' to go to QM2, last time i saw her she was leaving the sea to go as HR Manager of the Hotel by the pier in Liverpool.

Once said to me when she was a 'gadget' on Vistafjord and i asked her what she would be doing had she not come to sea;
In a really broad scouse accent.
"Flipping burger in McDonalds or popping out babies."

Two really, really ,really nice and incredibly competent ladies.

Where are they now? I have no idea but would certainly welcome an answer.

Hi Lynda.  I am magical Maggie  aka Maggie.
McManus. Casino cashier QE2 joined in 1975. Worked with Maureen Winder . We were employed by Mecca Sportsman as permanent sea staff, unlike the dealers who came on short contracts. Good luck with finding other female crew.
