  • QE2 started a dream to go to sea - now a reality!

I wondered if the tug was a clue but as I could not make out the name.  However on the starboard side of the tug there is what looks like a flag that is green and white.  Is this a country's flag or associated with the tug company?

Just realised it's the Brazilian flag on closer inspection - well spotted Lynda! Maybe this is the only suspension bridge on the Amazon River?

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Let me start it on the "20 questions" principle.

Is it in South America?

Yes,
and to safe energy, to Thomas,

Also No & Yes

The word ONLY is the best clue you'll get!

Following on from the South America clue and possibly the River Amazon there is one bridge that crosses the Amazon at Manaus.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Top marks to that Lady.

The 'only' is that it's the only bridge over the Amazon, strange as that may seem for a river over 3000 miles long.
It's actually called Pheilippe Daou bridge and crosses the Rio Negro river at Manaus.

Well, that was interesting! Something new to take in...

The river looks huge... what would prevent QE2 from reaching this place?

I seem to remember that Caronia used to venture far into Latin America -- would she have been here?

Thanks Andy I learned something I did not know yesterday when looking to find the answer to you question.

I'll hazard a guess it's not deep enough and probably has shifting sands as well?

The mouth to The Amazon is approx 30 miles wide, but then comes the first hurdle, a large sand bar which can only be crossed at high tide. As such QE2 would not have been able to cross this sand bar as her draft would have been too great, also there are several quite tight turns and QE2 does not like maneuvering at low speed.

I've been up to Manaus 3 times, twice with Cunard, on Vistafjord & Caronia and finally with Seabourn Odyssey, where this photo was taken, each time it's size and diversity just amazed me. That's even before you see the vast number of creepy crawly's that are attracted to the ships lights at night!

The bridge is just up river from Manaus and cruise ships don't normally go any further up river than Manaus, but Odyssey did on this occasion. The reason was that they were going about 10/20 miles up river to have a beach BBQ for all the passenger that evening. And when i say beach BBQ it's a little understatement, as Seabourn certainly didn't do things by halves, i refer you to the Seabourn advert of the 90s/00s with the waiter serving drinks in the sea to passengers floating on a lilo!
It was a spread like no other and would not have been out of place in a 5 star hotel 'ashore'. Everything, and i mean everything was prepared onboard and taken ashore, salads, deserts, ice for drinks, drinks, glasses proper plates, meats etc etc etc... My wife has some photos somewhere and if i can find them i'll post a few.

The incredible thing about the Amazon is that Manaus is not even half way along it's complete length of 6992km/4344 miles.

A truly amazing experience and that's before we get to the  passenger tours and shows. We were lucky as my wife was 'used' as a tour guide so did the 'crockle' thing and then reviewed it in the evening over a 'soft' drink and dinner.

Found this one of the bridge taken from a different angle and it shows it just before it was finished, note the gap between the centre span and the roadway leading up to it.

It looks a bit like one of the old berths in Cape Town circa 1997/8 possibly!

In the past I've looked up dates and ports (including from the webcam) out of curiosity using Sam and Ron Warwick's records on their websites, and I seem to recall this was in South America - specifically in Brazil. However I can't remember the name of the port off hand.
