QE2 1969 - Double Up Room Bar
« on: Feb 26, 2021, 11:44 AM »
Hi,

Last night on our fun Zoom call, "Bob C" gave us the latest demo of his incredible 3d walkable model of the interior of the 1969 QE2.

As part of this, Bob walked us up the spiral stairs, along the upstairs (past the incredible tall oval windows) and to the rear of the upstairs bit of the stage - behind the curved glass screen to where there was a rather wonderful bar.  I wasn't really aware of this bar, and I think Bob has only found a partial photo of it, but to be able to "go there" in Bob's model really brought it alive to me.

I'd love it if we can find some more photos of it.

YES!!!  Those are incredible!  but !  It would be good to see the other side of it - until Bob was talking about it last night, I hadn't realised you could walk right round it.

Was it called the Double Up Bar ?

I've attached a screenshot of Bob's 3D model tour from last night for comparison with Michael's photos of the real thing!

Not actual photos I'm afraid Rob but how about these plans - clearly showing the ability to walk around the bar.

And, yes, Double Up Bar.

Before , or after my time.

We think it only survived from 1968 until 1971

Correct, it was removed in the refit that the shops went into the Double Up Room - winter in late '71/'early '72?

I have photos from a 1969 voyage showing the original design of the Double Up Room and photos from a 1972 voyage that shows the shops there.  I also have deck plans from 1968, 1971/72 (in color!) and 1973 where the Double Up Room shops do not appear until the 1973 deck plan.  Thus the reason I think it was the '71/'72 winter refit.

While looking at the 1973 deck plans I discovered that there was a second Double Up Room bar with the shops.  The location is the aft end of the room where a small dance floor and five large windows looking aft out onto the Boat Deck were.

See below.

So the original bar forward was removed in the 1972 refit.

As Bob has detailed above a new bar / dance floor space was built aft of the Double Room Boat Deck but this seems to have been replaced by a shop in the 1977 refit as this 1978 plan shows.

I recall The Double Room in those colours with the spiral staircase in 1983 & 4. The Double Up Bar was gone by then.

It would be so amazing if a night club took up this design and recreated this today - it certainly would not be out of place. Such a contemporary design. Better still, as I've always said, it would be amazing if this were fashioned on board today.

On a more mundane note, I really like those chairs and imagine they would be very comfortable indeed!

When did they all leave QE2?

Those Double Room chairs were replaced in the 1987 transformation of the Double Room to the Grand Lounge as seen here.

When did they all leave QE2?

And where did they end up!?  They're genuinely worth thousands each now.

They were far superior to their replacements that's for sure!

To me, the chairs, the “space age colors”, the double room, etc. is QE2.  I had a hard enough time with the Britannia changing to the tables of the world restaurant let alone the 90’s decor.
