  • At Mach 2 three days after being on QE2...
The sounds of ships' horns
« on: Dec 11, 2020, 10:20 PM »
I received this in an e-mail from a friend this evening.  As my ears aren't in perfect working order, I thought I should ask expert opinions as well to confirm that what I am hearing is indeed very similar to QE2.

The supplementary question, obviously, would have to be how many other ships have very similar sounds?

Great Lakes 1000ft long bulk carrier "James R Barker" has a foghorn that sounds rather like the QE2!

The lifting bridge at Duluth Harbour has the higher pitch horn.

Hi Peter, I'm not an expert on horns but at least I could say that what I've heard in Dubai was something different than the horn sound in this video

I have tried to post a video clip taken from QE2's port bridge wing during the final Southampton departure in 2008, but can't? Used to be able to - what has changed? This clip has plenty of QE2 noise - and doesn't really sound like the James Barker. Lizzie has her own distinctive note and I don't think I have ever heard anything similar, except for once when I was overhauling a Super Typhon whistle on my own ship and I screwed the tone adjustment bolt way out just to see how deep a noise it would make!
I then screwed the bolt back in to my scratch marks to restore normality, and keep the deck department happy!

Aha! I think I see what has changed. In days gone by, one could insert a video clip directly.
Now, one has to upload it to YouTube first, then insert the link.
More work.

On the Disney ships the whistle plays the first few notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star" !

Want to hear QE2 booming over New York, take a look at the video I posted on Youtube a few years ago -

There really is nothing quite like her voice!
