QE2 Paper Model
« on: Dec 05, 2020, 11:54 AM »
One interesting thing I have noticed is that there is no good paper model of the QE2 , the only paper model of the QE2 is made by Schreiber Bogen, but it's not good.

I have contacted a paper modeler who made beautiful papermodel of the Queen Mary 2 , but he has told me that they are interested in making one but their schedule will not allow them to make it before mid 2021.

I have designed a few papermodels in the past, but I don't think I can make one of the QE2, even though I would love to design one  :)

Fantastic detail on the paper model.  How difficult was it to put together and how long did it take to build?

I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Actually, the model in the picture was not built by me, but I am making my own. It will most probably take around 20 to 25 days, it is not that difficult, if the person building it has some experience building papermodels. The most difficult and time consuming task is cutting those small parts from the paper and then folding them into the shape, also the sheer no of parts may be a problem. The catamarans are probably the most difficult part, it is a good idea to wear glasses while making them as making the model without glases will cause a headache which I had. But nothing beats the joy when the model is finally finished  :)
It is also a great activity in times of lockdown.

I am going to purchase a paper model kit from them but can't decide which one to make.
I have also attached pictures of the models and created a poll.
There are also models of Mauretania, Carpathia , United States and many more
you can check out their website, JSC.pl

Those models are incredible.

For me, the one that jumps out and appeals, is the Elizabeth, then the Caronia, then Mary.  I love Mary, but she has the disadvantage of still existing, if that makes any sense.

Good luck!

yeah, I also prefer the Elizabeth and Caronia, I like the Mary but it is more complex. But I prefer the Elizabeth as it seems more modern and elegant.
The thing I like about old ocean liners is just imagining getting up the first class gangway and entering the ship, the excitement you felt was tremendous.

I second this! This would be awesome!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Building the main parts of the model like hull and superstructure but the challenge is to figure out which parts go where, locating the parts as there a 1000 parts in 16 pages and then cutting them.
And yes, making the small parts is a challenge.

Another thing I want to make is the Southampton dock or the Manhattan piers but no has designed a template for them yet :)

It's not that - it's just that the traditional ships are much better looking, so in a limited choices poll..... *shrugs*

I don't dislike QM2, and I very much appreciate her for what she is.  She is a thing of beauty *compared to almost all modern cruise ships*, but she is no thing of beauty compared to the older liners with their sleek lines and not needing to have massive piles of balconies.... From some angles QM2 doesn't look good at all (to my eyes) - rear three-quarters being one, where she can look like a tanker...

Also, The Big U did not get any votes either, but it is not surprising. The Big U was built as a military transport under disguise of a TransAtlantic liner, and even though she is indeed a great ship in many ways, she does not exude a warm, fuzzy feeling that draws people to her. Admiration - yes. Love affair - no.

yes, the United States looks too much like a warship and especially hate the green deck and the lack of wood in the ship in general.
BTW, my choice has come down to either the Caronia or the Queen Elizabeth, also they are kinda expensive for paper models as most paper model are generally free, but many ships are not free but even then costs about $10 to $20 but this one with laser cut parts, UHU glue and shipping to India makes it $60 :)

I also found Big U and the America to be aesthetically unpleasing too. The funnels on the US just seem to be too large. However that's just my opinion bahahaha
