But before construction work started, the final model had to be tank tested.
This tank at John Brown's is a very small one.
Most tanks today are much wider & longer, with wave-making generators at one end.
The rails the carriages run on these days are also ground to the curvature of the earth so the tank depth is exactly the same at each end as it is in the middle.

I have spent 3 weeks riding the carriage during tank testing runs.
These days, the amount of data coming off the electronic strain gauges that connect the ship model to the carriage is absolutely incredible. The data is sent directly to computers for analysis after each run. It was a very interesting experience.

Thanks Skilly for posting. It is fantastic to see the RMS Queen Mary model in the test tank at John Brown's Shipyard.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

There was one at Riversdale College when I went there.
Only time I used it was during the summer  workshop classes and we were granted permission to swim in it!
