Captain Ian McNaught left QE2 for the last time on 29th June 2005 to begin 'time' with Princess Cruises as Captain of Sun Princess.

Also in the first picture is Karen Scott, assistant Tour Manager who, together with Gail Seymour the Tour Manager, organised the Roller.

Just a little confused by these posts - how come he was still on the ship in 2007-08 if he left it in 2005?
When we joined in July 2008 he told my son to go find an empty crew cabin on 5 Deck aft, and my wife & I moved into the Port side Boat Deck 3rd Officer's cabin (which turned out to be an excellent arrangement as I didn't have to stumble far from the Wardroom Bar to my bed every night!).

Maybe Ian McNaught just likes chief engineers - his father was one too!

Skilly,

Capt McNaught left QE2 on the date mentioned and as shown in the photo. From QE2 and leave, he then went to Seattle in USA to join Sun Princess as Captain, where he stayed for 3 or 4 contracts before returning to Cunard to Captain QE2 in her 'dotage'!
I had left QE2 about the same time and was enjoying a few days in Dublin with my wife, prior to joining Star Princess as Security Officer. One afternoon i received a phone call on my mobile from s'ton Fleet Personnel 'asking/telling' me that, my move to Star Princess was cancelled and i was to join Ocean Village in about 4 days! Fortunately we were due to fly home the next day anyway but talk about a 'pier head jump'! I spent 3 months on OV and left her in Funchal as she passed though on her re-positioning to the Caribbean for the winter season.
Then in Feb 2006 i joined Sun Princess only to discover on my arrival that Capt McNaught was  the Captain!!

The crew thought that he was ' demi god' especially as he'd taken over from an Italian who was to say the least not a very good man manager, especially with Officers on the Bridge.  They couldn't get their heads around the fact that he ate all his meals, bar a very moderate breakfast, in the Wardroom even when, as during the Alaska season on a Wednesday we were in Juneau and had a late sailing at 2200, so most of the Wardroom went ashore for food!
I think he spent about 2 years away from Cunard, before returning to Captain QE2 and finally QV. It was while on QV that he decided - i think- to leave and went to Seabourn [or Cunard MK2 as it was referred to at the time, before Princess got their grubby hands on it!] first as a Captain and then as an 'office wallah'!
Then along came Trinity House with an 'offer he couldn't refuse'!

People who were on the tandem with QV in January 2008, such as my Dad, will testify to Captain McNaught's well placed, tongue in cheek dislike of QV, no wonder he jumped ship to Seabourn (not being one of QM2's captains either) - I don't blame him!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Thanks Andy - follow it all now.

In January 2010 we joined Blair on the OV for a leisurely 14-days out of Barbados. We had one of the company cabins under the theatre. Thoroughly enjoyed doing pax escort duties between BVI & Venezuela.
Charlie Carr & Sarah Breton were a lot of fun. Sarah then went to Artemis, and the OV later came down here to NZ as the Pacific Pearl.
At one stage Charlie even told me off for not appearing on the bridge often enough!
Photo attached, off Granada. I didn't like the bow graphics.
Also, Charlie & Sarah doing their comedy routine.
Cheers,
Skilly

Captain Christopher Rynd who had previously been a long-time captain within Princess Cruises took over from Captain McNaught on this occasion as he'd be captain on our late July 2005 voyage. Captain Rynd also appeared as Captain in the Amarillo video filmed on the 2006 World Cruise.

After he retired Capt Rynd & his wife travelled on Seabourn Sojourn from Auckland to Bali once. At the Captains Welcome Cocktail Party, he come up to me and introduced himself, but i already knew he was onboard as i'd spotted him at embarkation the day before.  He had been Captain of QV when i had to leave after my brother died suddenly just after we'd left Dubrovnik for Malta, he was very supportive of my wife and i at that time. Anyway, as he left Sojourn in Bali i happened to be at the Gangway and as he went down the Accommodation ladder he signal to me to follow him. As we walked across the apron to the terminal he stopped and turned towards me and said; "I don't know the circumstances behind your leaving Cunard but, joining Seabourn is the best thing you could have done, well done and good luck for your future." With that he walked off and i have never seen him again. When he joined QE2 in 2005 i will be the first to say he wasn't my favourite Captain, but after serving with him on QV some years later either i had changed or he had! Because i found him very supportive of The Security Staff, especially when we had the 'stow away' in Athens and of course later as  i have referred to earlier.

Cheers,

OV had originally been built in 1988 for Sitmar Cruise Lines as Sitmarfairamajesty, but was sold and actually entered service as Star Princess, a fairly good quality Princess ship with many balconys! Unusual for a budget cruise ship.

Despite my jokes about her she had a lot of good points, sadly the Security Officer's Cabin was not one of them!I had a bigger cleaning locker next to my cabin on QE2!
But one thing you couldn't run her down for was her food, it was excellent. We used to do 2 x 7 day round trips from Palma de Majorca on two different routes, but always the first stop was a port in North Africa to satisfy the EU reference taxes! Every 2nd Sunday we were in Barcelona where ,waiting for us on the jetty would be 6 or 7 Davies lorries from S'ton with out stores for the next two weeks, all British produce to satisfy our British passengers!! I once had a photo taken of my stood by a pallet full of Heinz Baked Beans, my children thought it was wonderful!!!
Also we had Sky Sports 'raw feed', which is what overseas TV companies get and then add their own commentary.  So on a Saturday either in Ciivitavecchia or Monte Carlo, we had 'live' Premiership football at lunch time, in the afternoon and then again at 5.30pm!! Al these games were shown live in the Sports Bar onboard which was always packed! We used to joke that on OV, dress on Formal Nights was your teams Home shirt, while informal nights it was your away shirt!
There was also a cracking Wardroom on there, mainly made up of a few ex RN Tech guys, plus a sprinkling of P&O guys who had been on ships where a Wardroom had been and wanted to bring that across with them.
But my final abiding memory of OV must be 'children's tea'. This was a routine on embarkation day, which was every Tuesday in Palma alongside 0630, departure 'scheduled for' 2200, but normally midnight due to arriving charter flights being delayed. Anyway, Children's tea' was a Wardroom thing whereby at 2000 the galley would lay out a selection of 'kiddi food' chicken nuggets, sausages, fish fingers, baked beans, chips, English bacon, waffles and hash browns. Hmmmmm my mouth is watering just remembering it!!

So out of 10 how many would i give OV, for food 9, for general ship experience 5! For interesting ports 8.

Captain Rynd is the captain I remember most from a direct interaction point of view onboard QE2 as during that July 2005 cruise he regularly walked around QE2 in a very approachable manner and he would strike up conversations with people on an equal level. I will never forget him noticing, at Boat Deck aft just beyond the sports area, that I was reading shipping books from the library and then stopping to chat to me and my parents for a bit. Quite the inspiration. I also remember him waving/nodding to us thereafter such as in the Lido as one often saw the same people again onboard QE2. This was also the same voyage a rare bridge visit by the nursery happened as we headed back to Southampton. Coincidence or not, I have wondered since?

I don't know what things were like behind the scenes amongst the officers, and not wanting to get into the politics of the time with the P&O Princess takeover, but from a passenger's point of view he was a great captain.
