Hello from another fan

Hello,

I am so glad to be a member of this forum. It's incredible and wonderful to see, day after day, the continued interest in this magnificent ship. I was so fortunate to be born in Southampton and to be from a seafaring family.
My grandfather was at sea for 30 odd years, was torpedoed twice in WWII and, as a smoke room steward, served Eva Perone on the South America run. He served on Andes, Olympic, Empress of France and Magdalena among others. He also witnessed the scuttling of the Graf Spe in Montevideo.
My father, a musician, worked on QE2 from 1985 until her retirement. He is currently on Saga Ruby, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic.
As a child I saw that iconic funnel on the Southampton skyline numerous times and was fortunate also to see her in the King George V dry-dock in the days when she was refitted in Southampton. I wondered if I would ever sail on her.
I first boarded QE2 in 1986 when Dad got me a pass to visit the ship (back in the days when security was a dirty word) and had a look around. I was smitten from that day on. I moved to Thailand in 1992, but always visit the Cunarders when they visit Bangkok. I saw QE2 during her final call here in February 2007 and also saw QM2 and QV a few months ago.
Finally, I sailed for the first on QE2 in July 2007 to Norway. I still stare at the photos of that trip today, longing to see her again. The photo with my profile is sunrise over Southampton Water taken on the morning of disembarkation from that trip. I found this photo apt as I hope, one day, for the sun will rise on a new career for QE2.
Thanks.

Hi Louis,

Thanks for the welcome. I must say I have read your "travels" up until page 9 and am slowly making my way through them. I always wondered what it would be like to do a world cruise - now I know  :). Thanks for sharing. It looks like you joined QE2 around about the time two friends of mine were on board working. It's a long shot I know; Ian loveless (engineer) and Howard Kretzer (chef)? Incidentally, my father was the drummer with the Hot Rhythm Orchestra usually in the Golden Lion pub. Again a long shot if you may have seen him.

Hello Mike
Welcome aboard - it's great that you have joined us,
and it'll be good to read more about your (and your father's) experiences of QE2!
Having enjoyed those Jazz nights....
I wonder - is he on the drums here?

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.
