The thing with the crossings are having done a fair number when they were 5 days and round trip as well is that unlike a cruise you only have the limited number of nights onboard in which to get into it, ie meeting new friends, taking part in the onboard events and NY is always an very early start, followed on from usually a late night. The menu did tend to be repeated (sometimes) However you did gain from the gentle clock changing and the sensation of 28 knots all the way across, that was always interesing, the dress code was easy, first and last informal and the rest formal none of this super casual or elegant informal or whatever it is they call it ::).

Now a cruise is a diferent matter as you all  know, in the early days l always enjoyed the crossings but a cruise was so different, not so much the ports, l couldnt care less where she visited, but seeing places for a day gave an insight, a tender port gave great views of QE2, the interesting mix of passengers you met all over during the day or ashore or just waiting somewhere, granted of course the cruise was longer and you didnt have the feeling of going somewhere, the incabin tv did give an idea as to how fast or slow you are going it even showed us doing a loop the loop twice off the English coast as we headed for home.

My regret and really it was a dream 8) would have been to do the World cruise, But l guess apart from the hard reality of the fare!! could l really have coped with the 100 or so days, how on earth do you prepare for such a thing, how do you budget for such a voyage, 3 weeks on board and the onboard account runs to 4 or 5 pages, the food l did once lose a stone before a 3 week trip and lm throughly ashamed to say it was back on in 10 days, 2 weeks is a fine length for the waistline, 3 weeks and lm really pushing it and even then the outsize fitting clothes are very welcome, yes l know l could eat less,ok so l could reduce the american bacon at breakfast or skip the morning cookies, have salad with my Pavillion burger or steak (granted l dont have pudding on that days :'() and afternoon tea is simply a must cucumber and egg sandwiches, a lovely scone or little cake and if its those blancmange things (you all know what l mean) l just kick my heels in the air throw caution to the wind and have two with a refill of the delicious afternoon tea either in the Queens Room or Lido, (and theres nothing wrong with having it there)only once was it ordered on room service and we both felt so guilty we had to clear the plates :-[
Dinner is well 3 hours away a nice relaxing gin (full fat tonic) a nibble at the canapes, Leo the waiter would seek me out and ensure something hot was offered (canapes l do mean) and then of course Dinner and that speaks for its self, by the time it finishes another quick drink & the midnight buffet is underway, that requires a visit to check all is well and maybe a few strawberries, little cake or the chicken stirfry, and then by the time the yacht club adventures stop maybe a little BLT and glass of milk. Rest assured at home my eating habbits are nothing like the above, it is after all a cruise.
The the vast range of ports of call and more than likely one off ports it would be best to do the Cunard tours, yes they are expensive, but the standard is also very high.
And of course the luggage, its so nice to be able to pack what you want, not what you need and not worry about excess charges, perhaps l go overboard( no pun indended) and carry the odd suitcase too much, certainly on the very last trip as the suitcases were gathered in the customs hall it dawned on me the hired car was no use, the ford transit was perfect however pulling away in a van, white at that didnt seem quite right, At Kings Cross station the lounge assistant wouldnt lift some of them, something to do with health and safety.
So perhaps a World cruise might not have been a good idea, BUT it would have been so nice to do, mindyou how would you have asked for 4 month of to do QE2 world cruise.....

Pete, you're in the right place entirely. Our Chief Engineer, Waverley, excelled at the interviews because he was able to convince us that he had brought a hammer -- and indeed, he did -- as we have noticed at times since he started his duties ;)

If you have a spanner as well as a hammer, you will have every chance of using it. For instance on my bicycle, languishing in the QE2 garage all on its own with a puncture...

I have two - I wish I had taken my kids on board - they heard me talk about it for so long I would have loved for them to have had the pleasure of being on board.  Also, someone else mentioned keeping a diary when on board - I wish I had kept up with mine!  I started the night I boarded (11/21/1988) but my last entry is 11/24/1988.  It shows how bad the weather conditions were that night - I recorded the report at 00:00:  Sea state- very rough; heavy swell, force 9-10 winds.  I also note that it was talent show night!

You are really lucky transiting the Panama Canal on her Jerry - would have loved to have done that!

Have you seen this clip showing her final transit? I think it's very good :)

I know that mine is that I wish I would've had the honor of sailing onboard the QE2, the only cruise-like experiences I've had have been dinner cruises (Dolly Steamboat at Canyon Lake, AZ and the Odyssey on the Potomac River, D.C.) and the Mark Twain paddleboat in Disneyland.

If you're interested, I've got a few pictures from my trans-Panama Canal cruise (1998) here... I plan to upgrade the "tour" one day and include some larger shots... so much work so little time and all of that...

Here they are:

Looking at some pictures of the spa area earlier today, I really regret that I never tried out those fabulous whirlpools! We went down there during our first cruise -- the very day they had emptied all the pools and were starting to clean them... which would take until the day we had to disembark...  :(

And I regret I never got myself a second hot stone massage. The first one was a birthday present from my Mum, an hour of relaxed bliss, and as I lay there, so restful, for a good while, with the hot stones warming my back, I floated on those tiny movements which QE2 makes even on a calm day. Just blissful... !

I was lucky enough to cruise on her 5 times but my only regret is that I would have liked to cruised on QE2 many more times and would particularly liked to go through the Panama Canal on her.  Since joining this forum I also regret not taking more photos while on board as there is so much detail that I have either forgotten or missed. But I so appreciate the links to photos that people are posting.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

I regret not having discovered what makes QE2 so special not until 2000, and then waiting an unbelievably long eight more years until 2008 to make my first and only Transatlantic.  I very much regret not taking my boat to Newport, RI for the day when there were so many opportunities to do so to see and photograph QE2 in the harbor and perhaps follow her out to see.  I regret not getting into the hot tubs while they were eventually opened up on the January Transatlantic we took.  I regret I never had a boullion under a Cunard blanket on deck, anytime onboard. :o  I must admit I regret not "nicking" that leatherbound cabin folder since they all ended up in the skip in Dubai anyway, while I did take everything else that came under the door or was left on my pillow at night.  I still ahve the chocolates!  Lastly, after having time to reflect on this, I regret taking the self disembarkation route early in the AM on my final trip.  We should have gone to breakfast, taken our time, and savored every last minute we could have onboard.  Instead, we walked off, stopping briefly after the gangplank, and I just could not look back, even as we drove away from the pier in Southampton.

What I don't regret, though, is cancelling my booking on QM2 of the Eastbound TA with QE2 and substituting it with the Farewell to the UK voyage, which has left me a lifetime of lasting positive memories of the ship.  ;D

I regret not being born earlier so that I could have enjoyed every minute of Qe2s life as an  adult  passenger.....I never sailed on her as a child  so don't think I would have appreciated it as much anyway,as I still do not think a ship is a place for a child. but had I been even my 20s in 1967 It would have been better!  In fact would loved to have been born much much earlier say the 30s so I could have enjoyed all of those magnificent ships of state.

One regret never trying out the spa, main regret not discovering the joys of the QE2 a bit late in her ocean going life which stopped me from being on her more .
