Any regrets?

Anything you wish you had done but never got the chance to?  :'(

Or else; anything you did and wish you hadn't?  :o

Total cliche, wish I had been able to go on the bow...

I wish I was able to capture her smell inside.

Wish I had returned to my first cabin 4008. Although It is somthimes not always best to revist old haunts. But im not one to dwell. A part in the talent show would have been fun.

I wish there wernt certain people on my 2nd cruise who nearly ruined it for me. Still its all in the past

Not doing a T/A or the funnel run, visiting the bridge and engine room and like Matt says, standing on the bow would all have been great experiences.  However, just being aboard more than made up for any regrets I may have had.  It took 35 years to achieve the dream I had as a small boy and which remained with me through my later life.  I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to sail on her a couple of times.  More times would have been great obviously but no, I've no regrets just happiness and no-one can ever take that away fro me.

I thought I would regret never seeing QE2's engines in action - but last year we were given a superb tour of the Engine Room - it was amazing.

We were there to photograph the areas for our book. The tour extended to the store rooms, Bridge (where I'd been a few times before) and other crew only areas - we were both on such a high at the end of the day. It was bitter sweet as the tour occurred on the last day of what we thought was our last ever trip aboard QE2 - however I was not willing to accept that - and later on, in September, we found ourselves back aboard as Guest Lecturers.

So many superb memories from QE2.

So many people remember the smell of QE2, especially as you as you entered the ship at the start of a new cruise! It brought all the memories of previous cruises flooding back!

OK but no need to rub salt in my open wounds there Chris lol!  Seriously though, good for you and I have certainly enjoyed seeing the results of your efforts and sharing with me those parts I would otherwise unlikely see.  I also recall speaking with you & Rachelle as we stood outside the Lido that final morning watching them unload the new sunloungers and you saying that you just wanted to leave now rather than hang around any longer.  I know exactly what you meant, beacause I was feeling the very same!

Matt - I remember may smells, not all of them pleasant lol!  Does anyone remember the often overpowering smell of fuel as you progressed deeper down into the bowels of the Grand old Girl?  That was an 'interesting' smell that one!

Yes, not ever getting around to doing a second trip. Troubles at work, which finally became so toxic that I resigned in 2002 and have not worked fulltime since. I was a busdriver for 25 years until Stagecoach bought out the Auckland busses and everything turned to mud. Hence, without wages, could not afford to cruise . Oh well, at least I took the day off nearly everytime QE2 came to Auckland, got up early to see her arrive many years. Am not sure whether I would bother for QMary der Grosse. She has to woo me. QE2 had me falling in love the first time I saw her.

It's amazing how much detail is being referred to in the posts -  I just wish I'd written down the words written on the walls - in (I think?) the Chart Room bar

I kept going back to those too but being lazy, never wrote them down. Really liked the excellent calligraphy too...

"Well I didnt really slept so I ended up snacking at 4am"

"well i got up a bit early for breakfast so I headed up on deck for a lap then went to the QE2 shop to buy a small rucksack"

"i went tot he funnell bar to get a drink and relax and was approached by a guy called andy..." LOL

"at lunch I dropped a BBQ rib in my lap"

"we put pamela on the bus to go back to the port"

Interesting stuff huh?

My regret concerning the QE2 is not going on a transatlantic crossing aboard her.You see the 9 voyages aboard the QE2 that I was aboard her for were cruises that started and ended in New York except for the last time I was aboard the QE2 in January of 2006 when the QE2 did her New York to Los Angeles segment of her World Cruise.Well at least I was aboard the QE2 transiting the Panama Canal. When the QE2 arrived in Los Angeles that is where I got off her for what would be the last time I was aboard her.At that time in January of 2006 I did believe in the propaganda that they would keep her in service beyond 2010 and I would go on her again. When I got off the QE2 in Los Angeles I then spent the night at the Queen Mary which she is located about 15 minutes from where the QE2 docked. But at least last year I did drive into New York to see the QE2 since I live in Northern New Jersey near New York City.If there is no traffic I can drive to the Manhattan Piers 88,90 and 92 where the QE2 always docked at whenever she was in the Port of New York,in about 45 minutes from my house.

My regret concerning the QE2 is not going on a transatlantic crossing aboard her.

I agree Jerry. I would have loved to have seen her at her finest doing battle with the North Atlantic waves - and emerging as a worthy victor!

I think just general regrets that, for me, there was just not enough time to enjoy being onboard her before she was taken away from us.
It's only in the past few years that I've been in a financial position (work secure, mortgage manageable, student debts paid off) to travel in the way I'd always wished to. Sadly, time was already running out for me.  :'(

I was more than ready and willing to travel on her on my own and have an adventure or two along the way and am heartbroken that I will never have the chance.
She was my first real 'love' as far as a ship goes and others have just not been able to live up to her; I doubt if one ever will. You never forget your first love right?  :(

I so agree, Matt. Had I not been on the Clyde for her final arrival in October, I would never have had that joy... seeing her as a speck in the distance... very soon becoming herself, the funnel giving her away from far away... and even though I knew that I would be seeing her for the very last time that day, my heart leapt with joy when she sailed towards us in her full splendour and majesty!

Even thinking about it now, gives me a rush of delight  :D

The views would be great to see sometime!! The send off from NY was as perhaps most onboard will say was pretty poor! only a handfull of bystanders there to see us off and only a few sight seeing boats to escort us down the river, all in all we did expect a bit more, after all she has only been sailing in and out since 1969.
Even the send offs from Southampton at the start of the Round UK and final crossing were perhaps a bit lack lustre, a brass band would have been at least something.

Probably the worst send off was Belfast, we left shortly after midnight, with an exclusion zone of half a mile nobody was allowed within that zone, we departed to the flashing lights from the one police car. As we sailed past a docked freighter (heck they had more people out on deck seeing us than on the dock side) one of the crew shouted out "Goodbye QE2" l was under the bridge wing with only a few folks on deck and l couldnt resist shouting back "Goodbye Belfast.... " "We're not coming back...They have sold the ship... To Dubai" the few in earshot on deck did laugh.

Contrast that to arriving in Cork where we had an over night stop (thanks to the weather Cherbourg was omitted) as we sailed in you could see the crowds  on the shore and then we heard the sound of the bell ringers, that was an awesome sound and really quite moving.
Even when QE2 was tied up it was surprising just how close the public were allowed to her.And their send off  did them proud as well.
South Queensferry was another non event :(

Its was indeed Ms CM
I rather fear she wont listen to us diehards, we are but only numbers on a sheet, who live in the past, and were perfectly happy to sail on a 40 year old ship, and really she wasnt old, just lived in, the walls could tell stories (lm glad they dont) she had class built into her and an atmosphere all her own, we happen to like the quirky layout, the odd staircases, the "welcome home" on boarding (the QE2 crew actually notice the little world club badges) the crew seem to remember what you want and how you like it,.the teak decks, not some plastic sheeting passed off as such, mindyou it makes for easy cleaning l suppose, the vomit that errupts crossing the bay just slides off.
They resent us for all that, When in reality they want new blood to sail on the new modern ships and enjoy the hyped up Cunard whitestar service that is rammed down our throats, heck as soon as you board QE2 you were shown to your cabin, on these new ones  they just tell you where to go and thats only the start.

Book early and save, Nope its book early and be screwed by Carnival, how often have we booked a voyage then the price is dropped then you hear of the newbies at checkin whose cabin numbers have changed (err its called an upgrade dear) and while we are here, it is a her and she is a ship not a boat
Of course the upgrade fairy is there in mind and body and with a great big marker pen marking at random the passenger list and those lucky to get hit are bumped up, loyal but mostly not.
A dear friend of mine sailed over 40 times on QE2, including 2 world cruises and never once was upgraded, ok we know its not an entitlement, but she always knew that once onboard she was eating with the crew ;) such is the dedication of the old world QE2 crew

Perhaps the  loyal band of QE2 pax are a dying breed who do live in the past, but we are quite happy there, and we know exactly what we are getting, the odd burst pipe or two didnt spoil the voyage, or no cold water in the cabin (1987) it only made us laugh, did we want to sue Cunard for such things that left others traumatised and vowing never to sail Cunard again.. Nope it sure as heck didnt and l for one am not quite ready to be dragged kicking and screaming onto these new Queen ships, where service is standard, the walls are plastic (to match the deck) and horror of horror they call you a guest, damit l paid my fare l was am a QE2 passenger >:( not a Carnival guest.. and proud of it

anyway l fear lm way of topic here (or perhaps all at sea)

The thing with the crossings are having done a fair number when they were 5 days and round trip as well is that unlike a cruise you only have the limited number of nights onboard in which to get into it, ie meeting new friends, taking part in the onboard events and NY is always an very early start, followed on from usually a late night. The menu did tend to be repeated (sometimes) However you did gain from the gentle clock changing and the sensation of 28 knots all the way across, that was always interesing, the dress code was easy, first and last informal and the rest formal none of this super casual or elegant informal or whatever it is they call it ::).

Now a cruise is a diferent matter as you all  know, in the early days l always enjoyed the crossings but a cruise was so different, not so much the ports, l couldnt care less where she visited, but seeing places for a day gave an insight, a tender port gave great views of QE2, the interesting mix of passengers you met all over during the day or ashore or just waiting somewhere, granted of course the cruise was longer and you didnt have the feeling of going somewhere, the incabin tv did give an idea as to how fast or slow you are going it even showed us doing a loop the loop twice off the English coast as we headed for home.

My regret and really it was a dream 8) would have been to do the World cruise, But l guess apart from the hard reality of the fare!! could l really have coped with the 100 or so days, how on earth do you prepare for such a thing, how do you budget for such a voyage, 3 weeks on board and the onboard account runs to 4 or 5 pages, the food l did once lose a stone before a 3 week trip and lm throughly ashamed to say it was back on in 10 days, 2 weeks is a fine length for the waistline, 3 weeks and lm really pushing it and even then the outsize fitting clothes are very welcome, yes l know l could eat less,ok so l could reduce the american bacon at breakfast or skip the morning cookies, have salad with my Pavillion burger or steak (granted l dont have pudding on that days :'() and afternoon tea is simply a must cucumber and egg sandwiches, a lovely scone or little cake and if its those blancmange things (you all know what l mean) l just kick my heels in the air throw caution to the wind and have two with a refill of the delicious afternoon tea either in the Queens Room or Lido, (and theres nothing wrong with having it there)only once was it ordered on room service and we both felt so guilty we had to clear the plates :-[
Dinner is well 3 hours away a nice relaxing gin (full fat tonic) a nibble at the canapes, Leo the waiter would seek me out and ensure something hot was offered (canapes l do mean) and then of course Dinner and that speaks for its self, by the time it finishes another quick drink & the midnight buffet is underway, that requires a visit to check all is well and maybe a few strawberries, little cake or the chicken stirfry, and then by the time the yacht club adventures stop maybe a little BLT and glass of milk. Rest assured at home my eating habbits are nothing like the above, it is after all a cruise.
The the vast range of ports of call and more than likely one off ports it would be best to do the Cunard tours, yes they are expensive, but the standard is also very high.
And of course the luggage, its so nice to be able to pack what you want, not what you need and not worry about excess charges, perhaps l go overboard( no pun indended) and carry the odd suitcase too much, certainly on the very last trip as the suitcases were gathered in the customs hall it dawned on me the hired car was no use, the ford transit was perfect however pulling away in a van, white at that didnt seem quite right, At Kings Cross station the lounge assistant wouldnt lift some of them, something to do with health and safety.
So perhaps a World cruise might not have been a good idea, BUT it would have been so nice to do, mindyou how would you have asked for 4 month of to do QE2 world cruise.....

I know that mine is that I wish I would've had the honor of sailing onboard the QE2, the only cruise-like experiences I've had have been dinner cruises (Dolly Steamboat at Canyon Lake, AZ and the Odyssey on the Potomac River, D.C.) and the Mark Twain paddleboat in Disneyland.

Looking at some pictures of the spa area earlier today, I really regret that I never tried out those fabulous whirlpools! We went down there during our first cruise -- the very day they had emptied all the pools and were starting to clean them... which would take until the day we had to disembark...  :(

And I regret I never got myself a second hot stone massage. The first one was a birthday present from my Mum, an hour of relaxed bliss, and as I lay there, so restful, for a good while, with the hot stones warming my back, I floated on those tiny movements which QE2 makes even on a calm day. Just blissful... !

I was lucky enough to cruise on her 5 times but my only regret is that I would have liked to cruised on QE2 many more times and would particularly liked to go through the Panama Canal on her.  Since joining this forum I also regret not taking more photos while on board as there is so much detail that I have either forgotten or missed. But I so appreciate the links to photos that people are posting.

I regret not having discovered what makes QE2 so special not until 2000, and then waiting an unbelievably long eight more years until 2008 to make my first and only Transatlantic.  I very much regret not taking my boat to Newport, RI for the day when there were so many opportunities to do so to see and photograph QE2 in the harbor and perhaps follow her out to see.  I regret not getting into the hot tubs while they were eventually opened up on the January Transatlantic we took.  I regret I never had a boullion under a Cunard blanket on deck, anytime onboard. :o  I must admit I regret not "nicking" that leatherbound cabin folder since they all ended up in the skip in Dubai anyway, while I did take everything else that came under the door or was left on my pillow at night.  I still ahve the chocolates!  Lastly, after having time to reflect on this, I regret taking the self disembarkation route early in the AM on my final trip.  We should have gone to breakfast, taken our time, and savored every last minute we could have onboard.  Instead, we walked off, stopping briefly after the gangplank, and I just could not look back, even as we drove away from the pier in Southampton.

What I don't regret, though, is cancelling my booking on QM2 of the Eastbound TA with QE2 and substituting it with the Farewell to the UK voyage, which has left me a lifetime of lasting positive memories of the ship.  ;D

I regret not being born earlier so that I could have enjoyed every minute of Qe2s life as an  adult  passenger.....I never sailed on her as a child  so don't think I would have appreciated it as much anyway,as I still do not think a ship is a place for a child. but had I been even my 20s in 1967 It would have been better!  In fact would loved to have been born much much earlier say the 30s so I could have enjoyed all of those magnificent ships of state.

One regret never trying out the spa, main regret not discovering the joys of the QE2 a bit late in her ocean going life which stopped me from being on her more .

(1) Not actually touching her hull on the Clyde in Aug 1994 when she was heading down river. Got close enough but bottled it!
(2) Not being able to afford a cabin on the 2007 round UK cruise because we'd already booked our first Transatlantic on QM2. (Dont regret the T/A BTW)
(3) Wishing I was old enough (or had a time machine) to actually go back to her launch day and witness her arriving in Greenock etc etc.
(4) Not finding this forum until late 2010!!

I have lots of on board photos of QE2, mainly taken on her final Cunard voyage to Dubai. on my flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/galeforce19/ which you may not have seen

Not doing the Southampton to New York Transatlantic crossing. I have done the Southampton to Fort Lauderldale crossing on QE2  but that doesn't count!

I just thought of 'another' regret,,,,,

NEVER listening to all my Uncles when they talked about the days work in the yard or about the mighty ships they built.........as a wee girl I was never interested......now I would have listened for hours on end.......too late...they are not here now.....BIG REGRET!

I definitely agree with that last regret.

I don't know what was wrong with me... my Dad was flying all over the world, to often exotic locations, to attend to QE2 and I never asked him about what he was up to.  I was very young, mind you, but if I could go back in time... my adult renewed interest in QE2 didn't really strike until my late 20s, when Dad was long gone sadly.

Yes Rob we were born too late!! Obviously your Dad was a very important part of QE2...not just in the yards like my family....so what did he do?  Would you post any pics of him at work for Cunard?  I only ever had one pic of my family  at work in the yard and over the years its disappeared...I'm so annoyed, I'd do anything to get it back.

I share the same regret that I had not asked my Dad more about his work in John Brown's.  He had worked in the yard for over forty years and had worked on the three queens.  He had a lot of knowledge about these and other ships that I wish I had asked more about.  He particularly loved the design of the QE2.  A couple of days ago I had posted in the QE2 Build Photos topic some photos that my Dad had taken of the ship and as I was posting these I remembered how enthusiastic he had been the time at about this new ship.  Definitely a regret not to have asked more questions but I am also glad that it was through him that I first was on board the QE2 just after her launch and this was the start of my fascination for her.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Sounds like there is a shipyard family 'emerging' from this topic!!

How lovely...and we all share the same 'regret'!

Anything you wish you had done but never got the chance to?  :'(

Or else; anything you did and wish you hadn't?  :o

Seriously big regrets - as we didn't visit the Bar of the Princess Grill.
If anyone has any photos of this area taken over the years,
it would be a wonderful treat to see them!

Rosie, I Googled " qe2 champagne bar "princess grill" " and found a few online.  Not sure what particular angle you are loking for but its a start.  Sadly, I have no photos of that area as it was either off limits or not functioning (used as a store room in the mid-70's) during my era from 1969-79.

Thanks so much Bob, for taking the trouble to look it up.

Flagship posted a photo of the original uplighters on another thread,
and I think Rob visited the area in April.
It will be good to find something that gives a sense of being in there and having a look around...
I haven't checked yet - there may be something very good on Richard's great Elettra site too.

I guess that when you were there, it was a vintage decade -
and to be kept off-limits could have become a seriously big regret too!

I have no regrets. I was lucky, I was on for 10 mths 71-72 and then 73-Xmas 88. That was in the days when staff were allowed to be characters. If they stepped over the line...yes they paid. Stewards and stewardesses knew their their punters,,,,,they were friends, waiters as well..
The whole cruise industry today seems to be so impersonal.
They just want the buck,,,not the repeat business.
Cunard was never like that.
In my early days all the headwaiters used to have a book. Stated the pax name wine preferences, what view they liked, if they wanted salad with the entree or a separate course etc etc.
Now it seems to be get em in and get em out

Looking at some pictures of the spa area earlier today, I really regret that I never tried out those fabulous whirlpools! We went down there during our first cruise -- the very day they had emptied all the pools and were starting to clean them... which would take until the day we had to disembark...  :(

Looking at stowaway2k's picture of the scene in our Gallery brought back a great wave of that regret this morning... how I wish I could have the chance all over again!

My biggest regret is not sailing on her.

I also wish I had gotten interested in QE2 earlier than I did (2007 instead of 2009). If this was to be the case, I would have done everything in my power to see her up close docked to my closest port, Los Angeles.

Hi Brandon
I first saw her when I was a teenager in her early days moored at Southampton ( I'm Now well into my 70s) we went specially to see her and had to wait in line to get onto the  Quayside never managed to get on-board  but to see what in those days was the cutting edge of marine Technology was the
interest for most of the people,
Most  there like my family would not have been able to afford to sail on her,  the pride shown by the people was evident

I too harbour the same regret Brandon - we got a chance to do the Round Britain on her in 2007 for her 40th but we couldn't do it.

Damn comes to mind!  :(

Regrets ?  Yes...When the time came that I could have applied to be an on board musician with one of my groups, other things came up as they seem to do.  The thought is that there will be plenty of time to do it.  But, time has a habit of moving on and sweeping one's hopes and desires into the abyss...  :(
