Blue lighting of the sails in the yacht club
« on: Dec 07, 2019, 12:45 PM »
I could have sworn I posted about this before, but for the life of me I can't find it.

I obsess about little design details, whether its cars, ships or computers, neat little things that just work well.

QE2's Yacht Club "sails" added in 1994, had very simple small, cheap blue strip lights above each of them.  These neatly but effectively illuminated the sail, giving a dramatic nightclub feel to the space at night - both from inside the ship and, crucially to my mind, from outside and even far away.  The effect lifted the whole space outside the yacht club, and created atmosphere there too.

Approaching QE2 in the dark from the distance, that blue funky glow from the big glass windows, indicated that she wasn't just some old fuddy-duddy ship, there was a club there!

It stuck with me so much, that I had to go look again in Dubai to see how they worked (attached).

Clever, simple design which done cleverly, can create something out of virtually nothing.

I'd love to be in touch with the people who put the whole Yacht Club together, and tell them how much I admire their work (the actual people responsible, not just the company).  There were so many clever details incorporated into it.

I'd also love to see people's better photos of the Yacht club at night, both inside and out please!
