Photo competition results : 2021 calendar
« on: Nov 02, 2019, 10:25 PM »
How time flies... when in 2012 we started publishing calendars with the prizewinning photos of the QE2 Story competitions, we never thought as far as 2021!

But now, we already have the first photos for that calendar, which will fill up as the year goes on.

This first month (the September 2019 competition results) is extra special, because of the wonderful prize offered by Commodore Ron Warwick and his son, Sam Warwick, of their joint book, "QE2, the Cunard Line Flagship", complete with a bookplate with their original signatures and a copy of the signature of the late Bil Warwick.

We had a poll to choose the topic, which was "QE2 in port", and this received a record entry of 74 photos, with every one of the 32 voters making use of 5 votes for this special occasion.

And it was shipnshore who won the poll and the prize with his superb photo "Liverpool Calling" :

The runner-up was Caledonia with "The QE2 in Trondheim in June 2008" :

Two brilliant photos with which to start off our 2021 calendar. Congratulations to the well deserving prizewinner and runner-up!

Congratulations to both! Two photos really showing how much of a sleek thoroughbred QE2 is.
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Forum members voted Stowaway 2K's photo, Twilight, as the favourite.

But because, we enter his photos in memoriam of him and the huge support he gave to the photo competition,  Twynkle's photo, "From beneath the bridge 2008" is the winner of the October competition.  Congratulations Rosie!

It is wonderful to see another of stowaway2k's photos doing well in the photo competition. It is such a privilege that we have been authorised to enter his pictures, which he generously posted to our gallery.

Congratulations to Rosie for a well-deserved prize!

Both pictures beautifully capture the silhouette of the QE2 Bridge against a gorgeous twilight sky.

We had 18 voters for the December 2019 competition. And these were their choices.

The winner is George C Griffiths' splendid picture "In Malta" :

The runner-up is Cunardqueen's lovely view of "QE2 all tied up" :

Wonderful to have these pictures in our collection, and looking forward to including them in the 2021 calendar!

I would love to read from the two prizewinners how and where they took these beautiful pictures.

Oh my goodness thanks to those that voted and to all the other entrants, l really think every photo is a prize winner .
As to the story behind , i  think it was taken in 2004 in Marmaris Turkey . There had been a member of the crew who took unwell, l think he fell down stairs or something and was quite badly injured and it required us to speed up to get into port earlier than expected, which we did. Marmaris was a beautiful little place and one of the few places i always said l would like to go back to. The markets were pretty amazing but oh jees the carpet and leather sales guys, these guys just dont take no for an answer. It was as the photo shows a glorious day . Being of the age that is now forgetting things and it was a long time ago.Im thinking it was Captain Bates and we had tried to get into Malta but the swell broke a Tug rope, which in itself was a pretty scary thing to see  and we couldnt get into Malta so headed to the next port.  Having down a few Med trips you always think your memory wont let you down.
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

As far as my photo being judged the winner in the December competition - a big thanks to all who voted.
As I said - it was taken in Malta - and specifically Valletta of course. I had been to Malta many times both on QE2 and for a week's holiday 2 or 3 times over the years. So that particular call in to Malta was not particularly special. So what I decided to do was to wander along to the QEII (Note it's not QE2!) bar on Malta for a few drinks and just watch the world go by. If anyone has never been in the QEII bar or didn't know of its existence I can probably find a picture or two of it - although it's nothing special. It was only because of the name I wanted to go there!

Thank you both for coming back here with the stories related to your wonderful pictures. It is always such a pleasure to read of the background and recall the atmosphere in which they were taken.

I have never been to Malta by ship, but imagine it must be one of the most splendid harbour entrances. I used to love watching QE2 on the bridgecam at my workplace, and if she was in Malta, I downloaded and kept many of the pictures.

For the January competition, on the topic of "Ropes, cables and chains", we have two decisive winners with wonderful photos.

Hamburger's "Complete chain" is an extraordinary picture, one that very very few of us would ever have had the privilege of seeing :

And the very close runner-up was Cunarder Man's "Tied up in Malaga 2004" with its frayed but solid rope :

Two fine pictures, which I am already looking forward to incorporating in next year's calendar!

Congratulations to both photographers!

Cunarder Man, did you take your photo during QE2's overnight stay in Malaga in October 2004? If so my parents and I were also onboard.

George's mention of the QEII Bar in Malta (Feb 20th, 2020) got my memory neurons going. On 11.07.2008 I stood outside the door of the bar (see attached photo) and was very tempted to enter and have a drink to cool down. Then I remembered I had my youngest son with me, and I didn't want to lead him astray as he had to return for duty in a couple of hours (QE2 3/O).

We wandered on further, spent a few more hours in town, and eventually returned to the ship via the road down from the RAF Memorial. I turned to look at QE2, then took the attached photo of her - nearly the same as the one George took, but there was a lot less traffic on the wharf. My angle is slightly different, so I couldn't have stood on the same spot!
Great Coincidence - I wonder how many others snapped the same photo.
A greatly enlarged version now hangs on my office wall. The photo date says 12.07.2008 because the camera was still set on Kiwi time - a day ahead.

The February competition on "Works of Art on board QE2" led to the extraordinary result of three winners : Cunarder Man's "Mauretania" and "Mauretania restaurant art" and Frazscot's "Stair from One Deck". Well deserved congratulations to both!

Mauretania

Mauretania Restaurant Art

Stair from One Deck

The runner-up is James A Hypher's "Lido midnight ice sculpture", entered by Thomas Hypher.

Lido Midnight Buffet Ice Sculpture

All of these are beautiful, and the fact that only one vote separated them, just shows how many works of art we appreciated on board QE2. Wonderful memories!

Chuffed is a great word and I'm really chuffed to have won this months competition especially when I was up against such great pictures.       I thought my other selection 'Finished with engines"might be in with a chance as it was a small part of a great piece of art not normally noticed but the stair from my favourite deck won the day.
Now I will have to pick a subject for another contest and that could be difficult to find something that has not yet been done...................

Or maybe he was sorry to have been left behind and would have enjoyed a port excursion...

Congratulations to both winners! QE2's night lighting in the Cunard days really worked particularly in regards to the funnel and signal mast illumination, nothing fancy but at the same time very effective - much like how she was onboard, subtle but still classy.

Also it is good to see the opposite angle (Battery Park?) to what we had onboard QM2 for QE2's final New York departure - what was a bittersweet occasion.

Isabelle is busy working behind the scenes on your 2021 calendar and I've just had a sneak preview!

It looks really exciting, but it will be a wee while yet until you can order yours... watch this space, more news coming soon!  Forum members get first dibs :)

Why did the man get fired from the calendar factory?

Because he tried to take a month off...

Looking forward to seeing the 2021 Calendar! Had to chuckle at the joke!

Congratulations to Fraser (frazscot), who this month is both the main winner and the runner-up winner, with two historical photos. Fascinating glimpses into the earlier life of QE2, starting with her construction!

This early photo was the clear favourite among the voters :

Sometime in 1966 !

Congratulations also for the runner-up photo of a period when this area looked so different from her final appearance :

Tender & pool in the 80's

Once again, many thanks to everyone who entered photos and everyone who voted, helping us to keep increasing our library of QE2 photos during all phases of her life at sea.

Looking forward to receiving the originals of these photos, which will go into the 2021 calendar, currently taking shape.

We had many fantastic photos entered for the August competition " QE2 with a boat or ship as an escort" in fact Rod summed it up when he said "in my opinion this set of "piccies" is the best ones"

Thanks to everyone who entered photos and who voted  :)

We have joint winners this month - congratulation to both of you:

Pete Hamill's photo "The Race is on"

and ...

Isabelle Prondzynski's photo "QE2 and Company"

You can almost feel the movement of the boats in these two pictures.

Two of Hamburger's photos were joint runners up:

Following QM2

Nutshell beside QE2

Seeing the fantastic selection of photos in the photo competition each month, makes it so worthwhile.

Remember to look out for details of how to order the 2021 Calendar which will be ready to order soon.

What an exciting competition that was! Thank you so much for enjoying it and for voting.

And amazing to close the year with two winners and two runners up! I shall now try and accommodate all the winning pictures of the year in two or possibly even three calendars. Much to look forward to.

To close the year, we ran a competition among the prizewinners of the year, and although all had been prizewinners before, this is the result that emerged when we had another look at the best of the best.

https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php?topic=9526.0

The prize of the year (a QE2 Story calendar for 2021, with this photo on the cover page) goes to :

shipnshore's "Liverpool calling" :

The runners-up were :

Cunarder Man's "Together Mid-Atlantic"

and :

Hamburger's "Complete chain"

... with another 4 photos following only one vote behind. It was a truly memorable poll!

Big thanks to everyone who submitted photos to the competitions during the course of the year, who gave us this wonderful selection of the best of the best.

And congratulations to the prizewinners!
