Yes, thanks Capt. Woodall. Pity you would rather see QE2 like this though:

It was bad enough to see the SS France/Norway being eaten away by those poor dismantlers in deplorable working conditions in Alang.  I could not bear to watch our ship meet this end.  Someone from the UK would have to step in and save the ship.  There would also be asbestos issues to deal with.  Let's not go there......

Sorry for the delay in this Rob but I've been tied up with other things for a couple of weeks - Great to have the answers to the questions and a big thank you for putting my question and answer first on the list  a real honour!

The ability to be able to ask these questions just shows what a fantastic resource this forum has turned into - well done Rob!

I missed this thread or I would have asked the following question. Perhaps someone else knows the answer to...
It was rumoured that either the Captain or ship's security officers (SPO's) had access to firearms onboard.
Was this true?

Yes they did.
Frequently when they started carrying Bomb Disposal Officers. (EOD)These Officers where armed during embarcation.
I remember after a late departure from Soton, the Officers had a darts match in the Wardroom against 2 deck "Pig" The EOD Officer was throwing like a blind man. I kept on telling him to take his jacket off! He took me to one side and showed me why....he still had his .38 Smith and Wesson on!
