I follow Thames TV on YouTube because they post fascinating (to me) old car reviews of 70s cars... So I couldn't believe it when QE2 came up, on a programme I'd never seen.

It oozes atmosphere, and you can absolutely tell the hugely significant place QE2 held at that time, which there is simply no equivalent now.

Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

Very interesting hinsight into a 1976 crossing. So different and at the same time so similar to the more recent times. Beautiful images and atmosphere.

I agree with the gentleman who appreciates the 5 days off without any phone calls. This is something that doesn't exist anymore today, not even on QM2, everyone being under permanent digital fix everywhere...

Had to smile with Mrs Julia Morley's comment: "I find it very unrelaxing... five days of hell!"

Great documentary!

Great documentary. Thank you for posting.

This brings back so many memories as I first traveled on QE2 in 1975 with my parents.
It was nice to see Bob Venning being interviewed. He was on QE2 for many years and had a
great sense of humour, it was also good to see some of her original interiors that I remember
when I first sailed on her including the beautiful Queens Room and the Double Room with it's
original sweeping staircase.

  • QE2 started a dream to go to sea - now a reality!

Wonderful documentary overall, but particularly the departure from Southampton (so familiar including with her whistles, yet different) and the arrival into New York with the then new WTC before the North Tower got it's 300+ foot TV antenna and the low rise buildings of the complex were all completed. Love the audio tones present in those bridge wing shots (filmed from inside the bridge) coming from the equipment inside or from the aerials/antennae or radars near the bridge - sounds that were not present on the bridge or on the bridge wings in her latter years at sea.
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

One thing that jumps out during the film is the speed of the water rushing by in the background!

Just finished watching part 2 and thinking there are so many snippets of information in this documentary. It really captures a moment in time in history and I hope this You Tube video is retained for viewing.  It would be terrible to lose thisThe interviewer in both  part 1 and part 2 tries to establish a difference in first class compared to tourist class passengers, referring to   "the holiday camp" and asking if the entertainment would be different for tourist class compared to what first class passengers.  The barman also refers to the "holiday camp" scenario.

I could watch this time and time again.

Rob had posted in the books and TV topic in 2012 when the DVD was available to buy but unfortunately it is no longer available

Very interesting and enjoyable film! Thank you, Rob, for having found it.

What a pity that something similar was not done 30 years later,  for the sake of comparison. And yes, I also loved the porthole scenes, with the water rushing past :) .

Excellent footage, couldn't stop laughing when the blast on the horn at 2:59 scared the life out of the chap on the bridge wing!  ;D
