Poll June 2019 Competition : QE2 Cabin Decks
« on: Jun 27, 2019, 02:53 PM »
The theme for the June Competition "QE2 Cabin Decks" was chosen by Clydebuilt 1971.

Thank you to everyone who submitted pictures, which we really appreciate, and we hope that you enjoy choosing and voting for your 3 favourites.

Voting is easy, but you need to be registered as a Forum member and log into the Forum to vote.  Whether or not you have submitted photos, please support those who have participated, by choosing your three favourite ones, noting the details, then tick the relevant box on the poll.  If you have entered photos please do not vote for your own pictures.

To make it easier for you, we have posted the pictures below, however you can also view the photos in the Gallery Album, "QE2 Cabin Decks" where you can see them all at once, in thumbnail form, plus you can view larger versions of the pictures by clicking on the photo to see medium size, and click once more to see them in large size.

You will not see the results of the vote until the poll has closed on 1 August 2019, after all time zones have had a chance to catch up with the voting deadline.

As always the choice is yours - enjoy!

The poll for the topic of "QE2 Cabin Decks" is now open.

Please enjoy looking through these photos, relish the memories they bring, and select your three favourite pictures. For some of us, they re-awaken cherished memories, for others, they offer a glimpse into those temporary homes on board!

Voted, and probably the easiest vote to make , well in my opinion anyway even if it was a confusing subject

I know what you mean, but for me also there were two I went for more or less instantly and the third didn't take me very long to settle on either.

The photo of the Aquitania Suite reminds me that, this was the cabin allocated to Margaret & Denis Thatcher when they attended QE2 for The Falklands 25th anniversary lunch.

As Chief Security Officer i was 'tasked' with meeting them at the gangway and, then escorting them to the Captain's cabin to meet the other Dignitaries before going down to lunch. The Aquitania Suite was designated as their 'powder room' stop after their drive down from London.
The Aquitania was used because, we were in Stbd side to that day as there was an MCA Lifeboat inspection also taking place and they needed full access to the port lifeboats.

I think that i've written about this visit before but if not then let me know and i'll regale you with my story of Margaret & Denis.

Andy, I'd love to be regaled about this adventure!

Could you add it to this topic please?

Just voted, an easier vote to make this time too. The photo of cabin 3006 brought back memories of occupying cabin 3010 (also port side, down the passageway going aft) on our penultimate voyage in August 2007 and cabin 3005 (starboard side) on our final voyage in July 2008. The forward/bow component of QE2's flatline type of sheer was very noticeable in all the forward cabins we had over the years (usually having forward cabins on 3, 4, and 5 decks).
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last stepped foot and sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2, in her new life, in Dubai back in January 2020.

The forward/bow component of QE2's flatline type of sheer was very noticeable in all the forward cabins we had over the years (usually having forward cabins on 3, 4, and 5 decks).

The 'sheer' on 3 deck was quite useful in one way!

Back in 2001, after The win Towers attack, QE2 was relocated to Boston as it's USA Trans Atlantic port.

One call was when i rejoined after leave and for some reason, possibly busing passengers up from NY, we were late sailing, which was put back to 2200/10pm.

At about 2100/9pm i had done a visual check of the outside of the ship and there was no sign of any light emitting from any of the s shell doors, which would have been easy to see as all the fwd end on the dockside was in total darkness. At the same time The Security Team started to do their usual rounds of the shell doors and reported in that all doors, bar the gangway & luggage room doors were secured for sea, the bridge confirmed this by their repeater system.

After sailing i was called by the bridge to say that a passenger had reported water running down the fwd end of 3 Dk, port side! I went to investigate, expecting possibly a burst pipe, quite a regular occurrence on QE2. On arriving at the scene i could see a fair amount of water and noticed it was coming from under the door to the carpet store. On entering the store i could see immediately where the problem was, the port shell door was open! I reported this to the bridge, switched on the power and closed the shell door, they reported back that the indicator was still showing the door as closed. I opened and closed the door a couple of times again, and eventually the bridge reported the indicator as showing open then closed!
The Housekeeping Flood team were called and set to work mopping up, fortunately there wasn't too much damage as the water had been spotted fairly early on in the incident. It seems that what had happened was that, for no reason anybody could establish, this shell door had worked it's way open, and on sailing with the ship starting to move the door had opened sufficiently enough to allow the tops of waves to ingress into the ship. That door was checked regularly on the return trip to S'ton, and no further problems were ever found. The electricians checked the indicator system out the next day and all was fine.

To this day it remains one of those - many - 'QE2 mysteries'!!!

Voting seems to have come to a halt - probably because members are enjoying the good weather!  :)

More votes need, so hope you can take time to view the pictures and vote for three favourites.

17 voters now, and the votes are more spread out -- so every vote counts as we get closer to the end of the month.

Great topic, with so many interpretations and so many facets of our beautiful ship :) .
