He's already supervising -- and saying "No, you don't start until I'm good and ready!"

Maybe you need to bribe him?

Good luck, Pete -- enjoy every piece of that beautiful jigsaw :) . It is so well deserved!

Jim is pleased to announce that, QE2 will up anchor en route to the preffered QE2 refit yard of Peter Mugridge,  who  has agreed to undertake the very 1st refit.  QE2 will up anchor at the 1st high tide en route to the leafy port of Epsom. No time limit is set due to the technical complexity & lack of previous knowledge (other peoples piccys).

I had an hour to spare this afternoon after getting home from work, so QE2 herself is now fully assembled.  Big decision for the weekend: Do I do the sky or the sea next?

I'm not spreading them out either due to a lack of space here - I'm working from within the box...

I chose to do the sea first on the grounds that it was nearer to me as I sat at the jigsaw.  That took about two hours with some interruptions, so I'll tackle the sky tomorrow.

I'll take a photo of it tomorrow.

If Pete Cain doesn't have any objection, I'll let the office jigsaw club have a chance to do it before I return it; this is an informal group at work who do jigsaws in drink breaks and at lunchtime on a table in the kitchen area in our office.

This sounds so much like the jigsaw puzzling effort on board -- everyone who was around could have a go! An excellent idea, Peter :) .

They have been alerted to it, and  I am pretty sure QE2 is next in line after the one they are currently half way through...

One senior member of staff replied to me saying that he and his wife were on board from the maiden call at Edinburgh on 13th June 1993 while en route to Norway; he thinks their cabin number was 2151.  I have recommended he looks through the forum...  ;)

They've finished the one they were working on, but I forgot to take into account that there's another one thatw as already in the queue, so QE2 will be next up after that.  However, the one they're about to start is a map of the world, so I guess it makes sense to do that first anyway... can't navigate a ship without a map...  ;D

Thank you, Peter! It is always so interesting to see how people assemble a jigsaw, and in which order.

I love the very first picture, looking so artistic, just the outlines :) .

As for the "upside-down" one, looking at the perspective, I think it was photographed that way. I can turn it, but think it was meant to be viewed from that angle.

Well done, the jigsaw puzzlers! And many thanks to them for having taken regular pictures :) .

Right then Peoples,
following the very successful double re-fit at Peter's - a feat never undertaken before I might add,
Peter has agreed to hold the jig saw for a few days in case anybody shows an interest in completing this beauty.  The only restriction being to complete at a leisurely pace , enjoy, share with the forum & have it back to Cumbria  for Christmas, how does that sound?.
Any member interested please message Peter soon, as he is incognito after the 7th for a while & won't be able to send it onwards.

1000 parts assembled and sorted - me thinks this will be a bigger refit than I had anticipated!

However the framework is assembled ready for the next stage.  Lots of work ahead for what will be an interesting refit and a challenge for me!  8)

Looking good!  But I fear you may have left the difficult bit to last!

Looking good!  But I fear you may have left the difficult bit to last!

Or to put it another way - I have started with the best!  ;D

The next part is a challenge, particularly as there are so many pieces and not enough room on my table.  I have to admit to feeling a bit seasick today!   ;)  but I have a plan to progress the refit over the weekend.

Don't worry; the sea and the sky are not as bad as they might at first look - there's an awful lot of helpful distinctive shaped pieces if you look closely.

Thanks Peter, I am working on sorting the "sea" into shades of green and distinctive pattern.  Thanks for the suggestion to look for the distinctive shaped pieces - that sounds like a good plan to me.

I have a "run" of finding pieces then I need to rest and go back later.

I think completing the sea before the sky is the best idea, but I may think differently when I finish the jigsaw.

Looking at the picture, what I like about the sea is that it has clear wave patterns, which should allow you to identify whether a piece is horizontal or vertical so to speak.

If you look carefully at the pieces by reflecting light off the front of them, you can tell from the lay of the weave if they are horizontal or vertical pieces.  This works with most jigsaws, incidentally.

Slower progress on the sea section.  The lighting has not helped as there have been some dull days.

Looks like good progress; interesting to see that the way we all do the sea area is different - compare with the previous photos for the way it's building up.

Hi - I've fixed the photo - and removed all the other posts discussing not being able to open it!

The following section will be moved to a new post somewhere more suitable shortly :-

The forum supports a variety of the most popular image formats, but not .heic (which is a new thing, only on some Apple devices).  Despite working in IT for 25 years, I'd not heard of HEIC files until right now.

If you need to convert a HEIC file for the forum, you can use this site, which just worked for me :-

Actually, I think you may find the sky less challenging than the sea because you can go by the shapes of the pieces without the wave patterns distracting you.

Thanks to Rob for fixing the picture issue. :D

Refit complete

I am pleased to announce that the refit of "QE2 at Anchor" is complete.  Work was on hold last week as a result of work on an important forum's newsletter and some other life things that had to be attended to, but work resumed this week and the final piece was put into place yesterday evening.  I found the sky a bit challenging but perseverance paid off and overall I enjoyed working on the jigsaw.

I will take time to admire the finished result then pack it up ready to be returned to Pete.

Excellent work, Lynda! The QE2 refit has gone very well, and she is ready to sail again.

Just like yourself, with these jigsaws, I always start with the frame, then our beautiful ship, and then everything else -- and I am sure that in this case, I too would have left the sky to last. But she needs the sky, the wind and the rain, the sunrises and sunsets, the clouds and the fog. Memories...

So Jim has departed for adventures ashore (look out the Rabbits), miss him so much, but , there's a jig saw to be done
the only stipulation is that it's back in Cheshire for December. I said I would do it last year & events as usual overtook me, so you have loads of time here to do it, & get it back..... so I can do a puzzle over Christmas, thank you..

I am trying to work out where each of the jigsaws are at present, so that they are :

-- either completed and sent to the next person requesting them, or
-- not completed and sent on to another person wishing to tackle them, or
-- sent back to the original owner.

As regards "QE2 at anchor" can we know where this is at present? Is it with Pete Cain (but without Jim...)?

I believe the original owner is June -- if no one else wants to give this jigsaw a try, could it please be sent back to June?

Please let us have an update here, so that we can keep track of this jigsaw. Thank you!

We can then conclude that Pete Cain is the owner (congratulations!), and he has confirmed that the jigsaw has already returned to his shipyard for some tender loving care. No further action required.
