Hi,

Update on what we have organised for the get together on 4 May in Glasgow, to celebrate QE2's maiden voyage.

Firstly, PS Waverley is opening to us for a tour - quite a privilege because she's normally closed to the public at this time.  This will be in one or two small groups, so you'll get to ask the crew any questions you have about this magnificent vessel.

Then we move to the offices of the historic Fairfield shipyard - the boardroom no less - for a light lunch, with presentation of two slideshows - and a special viewing of the wonderful "Magic Ride" film in between.  The second slideshow is of the "unseen" QE2 slides

The first weekend, the one that most closely coincides with the maiden voyage anniversary.

I don't know if you've been following the "box of slides" topic... but they're pretty much a good enough reason for a get together on their own!

That would be great.
How about the Riverside Transport Museum as a venue. You can hire a room there. Also a photo opportunity with the huge Qe2 model on display.

A slide show..Gee all we need is to hire a Guild Hall, get the SWRI Ladies to lay on a Tea with homebakes and we are sorted, get one of those mobile screens, a pointer and l can almost hear the commentary over the noise of a vintage slide projector whirring away... and naturally a raffle prize...

Hello,

The working plan for this is for an exclusive tour of the PS Waverley, and then moving to a suitable venue for a slideshow of the exclusive "Unseen QE2" slides, along with a suitable film or two... Magic Ride for example!

Forum members will be given first option, but we'll also be reaching out to our conference and newsletter mailing lists.

This sounds lovely, Rob.
The only problem being we can't manage to get North in May.
However, hopefully it might just be possible to link up through Face-Time;
hopefully we will celebrate with friends and others at another gathering - 'afloat',
that is the plan, so far!

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

The venue for the slideshow/get together has been confirmed as Fairfield boardroom, in the Fairfield Govan heritage centre.

What could possibly be more appropriate than a historic shipyard boardroom.

Thanks to Gavin for organising this for us.

It would be helpful if any forum members interested gave us an indication here.

I thought that the last celebration had laid my QE2 sentiments to rest. I don't want to go out to Dubai to see her remains and, as I didn't think there'd be anything else to see, I was letting her live in memory. (Hence my absence from here).

However, I have kept receiving the newsletter. When I received the latest fromRob I was very interested to hear about the photographs. We would be very interested in attending and I look forward to being able to book :)

Would loved to but getting a Saturday off in Hospitality is impossible for this date.
For whats its worth, your having the MAIN reason why people are gong, at the end after a lunch  and at the end  of the days events in the boardroom, this does appear to leave little scope for any discussion or worse if things over run.
Anyone ever been to a slide show organised by the SWRI, l did a great many years ago..what started off as a nice gentle presentation  ended up a rushed affair and many slides were rattled through and some were missed out.

Hi Myles,

It would've been good to make your acquaintance again - the last time I saw you was the first time I met you back on Waverley in 2010!

I totally get what you mean regarding slide shows - I've attended many in the past which have went way over time. The recently acquired slides are star of the show therefore the timings of the afternoon will be designed to allow a relaxed presentation with space for discussion / questions as it progresses.

The first slide show (by me) will be brief - a sort of "set the scene" type thing!!

If the author bought a ticket , he might be able to give some information on the slides, and bring some books and sell autographed to the masses or even dontate a book to the forum...
There are a great many books out there. maybe its not fair to promote one and not the other... there are some that actually support this forum, and many more that dont.

But thats only my view. I would like to think  that somehow, even if half the people going do nothing else but simply vote on the photos, then that would be a slight increase in the present votes cast,Imagine if they all voted, it takes only seconds , but lm banging my drum again.

If you have not yet booked your ticket for the event on 4 May to celebrate 50 years since QE2's Maiden Voyage please think about booking tickets soon as this will be a ticket only event.

At £30 a ticket you will have the opportunity for a behind the scenes tour of PS Waverley, then there will be transport to take you to Fairfield Offices for a light lunch followed by slide shows and a showing of the "Magic Ride" film.  What more would a QE2 or shipping enthusiast want?

We have had a good start to the sale of tickets since the tickets went on sale.

However, we are hoping that many forum members support this event, which gives the opportunity to meet up with other members.

Firstly, there is the one of opportunity, to be onboard PS Waverley for a behind the scenes tour, when the boat is not open to the public.  Then a short bus ride  to the Fairfield Offices, where after a light buffet lunch there will be a presentation of shipping on the Clyde 1940's to 1970's, a fantastic piece of history.  Then a special screening of "Magic Ride" before you have the opportunity to view the slides that Rob purchased on behalf of the forum.

But most of all you will be supporting the forum and meeting up with like minded people, who love QE2.

Have a look on the QE2 Story page and book your tickets before the event is sold out

Three weeks this Saturday until this fantastic event on 4 May to celebrate QE2's Maiden voyage.

Fantastic opportunity to get a behind the scenes tour of PS Waverley (circumstances permitting) then transport to Fairfield's Museum for a light lunch before a slide show of photos showing shipping on the River Clyde 1940's to 1970's, a special showing of Magic Ride before the a slide show of the slides Rob rescued from eBay showing the building of QE2 and photos of the early years of the ship.

Waverley is en route to drydock today under tow (boilers are out of service for overhaul) - she is due out of drydock the week before we are to visit so those lucky enough to have tickets will see the World's Last Seagoing Paddle Steamer as most have never seen her!!

That coupled with the rest of the events of the day is well worth paying £30 for your ticket!!

Please be aware that if something unforeseen is found during the vessel's drydocking then her exit and return to Glasgow may be delayed - hopefully all will go to plan! The joys of keeping a 70+ year old steamship in rude health!!

Come on - lets get this thing over the line! :)

We're taking you back in time to the brand new QE2!

As Rob has mentioned there has been a lot of effort going on to ensure the get together on 4 May to celebrate 50 Year since QE2's Maiden Voyage will be a huge success. However, we could do with a few more forum members buying tickets and attending the event.

It will be a unique opportunity to go onboard PS Waverley while she is moored at her berth at Pacific Quay. Then a bus transfer to Fairfield Offices Boardroom for a light  lunch. In the afternoon there will be a trip  down memory lane; firstly with Clydebuilt 1971's presentation of slides showing shipping on the River Clyde 1940's to 1970's, then what better way  celebrate QE2's Maiden Voyage than to have a special showing of Magic Ride.  Finally Rob will present the QE2 early slides he bought on eBay, giving commentary and inviting comments from the audience.

If you have time on 4 May, please think about supporting the QE2 Story by buying tickets and joining us for what will be a most enjoyable event.

See more information and link to purchase tickets on this web page:

I am travelling up to the Crowne Plaza Friday night but do not expect to arrive before 10pm and could be later.

Assume we assemble at the Waverley prior to 9.30 - and that photo ID needed?

Looking forward to the event.

Hi Gary,

Lynda sent out a newsletter email to all those on the attendees list earlier this week.

We are going to meet outside the Crowne Plaza and make our way as a group to Waverley to board her at 1000.

Maybe check your junk or spam folder? Sometimes these emails get stowed in there!!

Look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

We've now been featured in the Clydebank Post, the Greenock Telegraph, the (Glasgow) Herald and the Scotsman .... so far.

For more details of the coverage - we've added it to the "unseen slides" topic - https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php?topic=8881.0

Have a Grand Time on Saturday!
Will be thinking of you all so much -
and there are plans afoot to make sure that all on board Queen Elizabeth will have the opportunity to raise a glass too! Please do post photos and a good 'Sit Rep'!
Cheers - from, what will by then be en route to one of QE2's most interesting haunts, Yokohama!
We will keep you well-posted :)
btw - and Way off topic - did QE2 ever venture north of Vancouver?

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

Thank you to everyone who came along today, I hope you had a good time.

We had unbelievable access to the Waverley, a great buffet lunch, Gavin's presentation about Clyde shipping, the magic ride film (with ice cream!) And then the slides, we got through all 135 slides that I'd prepared.

Here's to next time.

A great day "get together" and a big thanks to Rob, Lynda, Gavin and Ali for all of their work in making it a successful day.
it was good to view the scanned slides of the QE2 and many of them are just stunning. First time that I have seen the Magic Ride film which is so good and together with the ice cream. Great idea.

Dear Lynda, Rob and Gavin,

Thank you so much for yet another great day out to remember the iconic ship that has brought us all (and so many others) together.

I had lovely time today reminiscing with George and Maurice (in particular) and realising that we (George and I)  had been on two cruises together on QE2 and QM2 celebrating two of our “big” birthdays! Also Gavin whose slides brought a tear to my eye with his Broomielaw slides of Burns and Laird boats on the Clyde.

Loved the ice cream touch for the film Lynda!

I have also emailed photos from today/yesterday which I have not uploaded anywhere so you can use them or not as you please? Only one funnel though?

Thinking we should have more regular events on perhaps a “Meet Up” group to share photos, experiences etc?

What if we booked a room like we did yesterday - arrange lunch etc - but then just have "QE2 people" come along, meet up, chat and share their memorobilia.  no presentations. ?
Yes exactly. That sounds good Rob.

Thanks to Lynda, Rob, Gavin and Ali for all your hard work making yesterdays event a great success. Thanks to the Waverley and Fairfield Teams too.  It was lovely to meet up with old friends and make some new ones too.  The visit to the Waverley, delicious buffet, all the presentations, movie (the ice cream was an absolutely inspired idea!!), the Fairfield Museum, and talking non stop 'QE2' with her fans, made for a perfect day.  Oh, and winning wine in the raffle was an added bonus!!
Here's to the next get together.
Cheers
Susan

Thanks for all your kind comments.

Thoroughly enjoyed the event from the visit to Waverley in the morning, lunch Gav's presentation, Magic Ride film with Ice Cream then Rob's presentation of the rescued slides.

It was lovely having the opportunity to speak to everyone at Fairfields then chatting over a cocktail at the Crowne Plaza.

Excellent day, but hope that more QE2 Story members support future events.

Excellent day, but hope that more QE2 Story members support future events.

From what I have read, it seems to have been a most enjoyable event, and I look forward to more detailed reports. And of course I am intrigued by the repeated mentions of ice cream -- what was this about?

As for supporting future events, it would be great to read how this could be done? Given that we are a worldwide Forum, presumably no matter where in the world an event is being held, there will always be some of us who cannot attend in person. It would therefore be great to discuss in what other form we might be able to offer such support.

Ice cream was available to buy at cinemas  so we thought it was a good idea to serve ice cream at the start of the magic voyage film and it was well received.

I would also like to hear from Forum members how we can involve them  in future events.

In terms of doing a "write up" of this small event, I'm not sure what to say... we followed the agenda that had been given out very neatly.  The main content of the event was the slides, which have their own topic.

We gathered in the reception of the Crowne Plaza - then walked over together to the Waverley.  We were greeted on board by manager Paul Semple, and taken to the bar area where he introduced us, then sent us on our tour with (Gavin can you add the name of our tour guide please) who was really excellent and knowledable.  All areas of the ship were explored and explained including the boiler room and bridge.

After Waverley we were taken by minibus together to the recently restored Fairfield shipyard offices, where an excellent lunch was waiting for us (ordered in advance from the Dry dock cafe https://dry-docks-cafe.business.site/).  It was nice to be able to support a small business and 2 charities in the same day.

A blow of QE2's whistle signalled the start of the presentations, with Gavin presenting Clyde shipping from the 1940s to 1970s (which dovetailed neatly with the fact that we'd just come from Waverley)....

A showing of Magic Ride followed - for many it was the first time they'd seen it, and much interest was shown.  Rob gave some trivia facts (from the topic on here) and we surprised the audience by handing out cinema-style ice cream at the start.

Then Rob was into the presentation of 135 of the slides.  This went quicker than expected, because audience participation wasn't as high as I'd expected.  People seemed happy to just enjoy looking at them, rather than ask about them or add information.  The slides covered 1967 to 1976 - although the focus for 110 of the slides was no later than 1969.  So we finished somewhat early, and went on with the raffle, which raised over £250 for the waverley, and then people got a chance for a chat together.

Afterwards a small number of us made our way over to the Crowne Plaza for some drinks and that was that!

Thank you very much, Rob! This gives a great flavour of the event, which I was so sorry to have missed.

I hope there will be another chance to view both the slides and the film (and taste the ice cream!) -- it must have been great to see them on a large screen and have a chance to ask questions and comment, or just take them in and be amazed that we can imagine our way back in time with their help.
