WOW ! :o
Hope you all have a great day tomorrow and raise a glass to our mighty ship
Not only making news 50 years ago today but 32 years ago as we raced (except for the short time when we were limping along ) to New York on the maiden voyage of the NEW  QE2.

From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

It was on the BBC News website this morning.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned and answered but, where have these slides been for the last 50 years?

I haven't seen anything on the BBC website - can you post a link Andy?
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Hi Andy,

Don't know!  But I'd guess an attic or cupboard... They were in a clearance I think and going to go in a skip... Makes you think how many others have been lost.

I didn't see it my wife told me about it from something she saw on her phone, i'll try to find out what it was, i'm sure she said it was BBC.

My technology starts and ends with two baked bean tins and a length of string!

We have decided that we're going to release a batch of these photos, timed to each newsletter going out.  I hope everyone is OK with that. They'll go into our gallery here, watermarked I'm afraid.

We're also considering other options.

I have now added another batch of the slides to the gallery.

These are from summer 1967, and include some SPECTACULAR images.

I have just added the latest batch of slides to the gallery, which include some of the slides that actually made me gasp out loud when I saw them for the first time.

A reminder that all images are © The QE2 Story and action will be taken if anyone posts them elsewhere.

  • QE2 started a dream to go to sea - now a reality!
Excellent photos!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Bit by bit, I shall be bringing the photos forward into the Forum, so that we can discuss them here.

QE2's bow being constructed, 1967

QE2 being constructed, 1967, starboard side

QE2 being constructed, 1967, starboard side with scaffolding stairs

Looking at these pictures, I am astounded at the height and size of QE2. Which of course we know, but all the supports and the scaffolding make it stand out even more!

It makes me wonder at the massive tonnage of supporting materials that were used, items that were later removed and presumably re-used elsewhere. The stories these scaffolds could tell!
