Favourite Food Ten Years On
« on: Jan 25, 2019, 06:14 PM »
When something is fresh in our minds, it stands out very clearly, and many times, sweeping other remembrances away.

Now that ten years have gone by for our QE2, what do you recall as your favourite food aboard ship ?

Is it the same as when you relished it when sailing on QE2, or has another dish from QE2 taken its place in your memory ?

 :)

The Casino Manager arranged for a breakfast to be available for the staff when closing in the wee hours, traditional english plus the chef would throw in a special ....curry was the most popular. No wonder I used to put on weight when working on the QE2.......

I remember often having fish based main courses on our later voyages when we dined in the Caronia Restaurant. I have always liked my food and liked fish as part of that, but the fish based main courses I had on QE2 were the best I've ever had and were often too good to pass up unless a curry was on the menu too  ;) .

Here are a couple of examples from the menu our waiters gave us at the end of our last voyage in July 2008:

The fish dish for dinner on Monday 28th July 2008 - when we visited Gibraltar on the return leg to Southampton:

Broiled Halibut Fillet glazed with Maitre d' Hotel Butter, Served with Green Asparagus, Cauliflower Floret and Piped Duchesse Potato

The fish dish for dinner on Sunday 20th July 2008 - the day we embarked in Southampton:

Pan-Seared Fillet of Fresh Haddock with Dill-Beurre Blanc on Zucchini, Fennel and Carrot Julienne with Steamed Basil Potatoes

Overall, QM2's menus - particularly in the later years of our voyages (up to 2014) look minimalist by comparison to QE2's menus and are on a more frequent rotation, more aspects of penny pinching methinks!
First travelled on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last stepped foot and travelled on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008 - we had the better view!

Two dishes spring immediately to mind:

Flambé strawberries done in Frangelica liqueur with fresh green peppercorns done at the table - Columbia Restaurant 1992.

Scrambled eggs, baby shrimps with an orange hollandaise sauce and topped with toasted almonds - again Columbia restaurant but this was available in Mauritania too.

Oh & btw, always great steaks on QE2.

One thing which made a vast difference to the serving was having your plate warmed on a burner at the waiters’ stations.

SORBET.  In 1987 it rocked my tiny 14 year old world, and I still love it to this day.  Also on that trip - freshly made, warm bread baguettes.  That was new to me too.

Then in 2007, a magnificent Lemon Sole, absolutely knockout (in Britannia Grill on the 2 night party cruise) - also on that trip, superb tomato soup, even though it wasn't on the menu, because I had a bad flu and couldn't face anything else on the menu.
In 2008 in PG, the food's a bit of a blur.... i'll need to dig out my menus and see if it brings up any memories.

As an adult, QE2's food in PG and BG was good, sometimes very good - but I have to be honest and say it wasn't the best food I've eaten - I've had better since a number of times.  Having said that it was definitely better than what we've had on QM2...

We have often had sorbets on QE2 and QM2! They are not necessarily listed on the menu but they are often on offer in some shape or form. Perfect for winding down dinner with in my opinion!

Excellent theme! The food memories that linger...

At the very top for me is the breakfast of Swedish pancakes with lingonberries... so delicious and never encountered anywhere else (not even in Sweden!).

In 2008, Pia and I were extraordinarily lucky in that we were invited to request vegetarian curries specially made for us by the Indian chefs. They were not on the menu (not even the special vegetarian menu), but we could occasionally request them a day in advance. Heaven!

Hot flambé desserts...

And the petits fours... best left on our table to enjoy... but economy measures on later cruises meant that they were passed around, one per person, and then disappeared.

And before I forget it, the key lime pie at the midnight buffet... making me forget all my resolutions...

On Vistafjord it has to be burgers ashore at Magdellina Bay, they always had that 'special' taste, especially as it was usually 0100 and still daylight. Then, once back onboard, hot chocolate and a 'touch' of gluhvein on the aft deck as we upped anchor and sailed off, either heading foro Longyearbyen or Honningsvag in what was still daylight at 0300!

Never had any trouble disposing of an enjoyable beef Wellington.
And I have never found one as nice, until we stayed on Queen Mary in Long Beach last August.
Beef Wellington at Sir Winston's restaurant is almost as good as on QE2.

Thanks for that one Skilly, jolted my memory banks...Always found Beef Wellington great on the QE 2 and other ships I worked on, never found one as good onshore....if you can find it!
