Quarter Deck D Stairway 1992
« on: Oct 12, 2018, 04:30 PM »
From the 1990 refit QE2 started to adopt a more traditional look in her public areas and this was reflected in the work done to Quarter Deck D Stairway in the 1992 refit.

The rug did't last long as it was ripped up for the 1994 Project Lifestyle but it was sold to QE2's top passenger!

l always thought the white handrails and dark carpet made the are look super posh. but no need for the green chair from the Midships bar.  Many a time spend in line up for the Captains Photos  .
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

All 4 of the photos Michael posted above, highlight the importance of lighting - and not bright lighting either!

The ship model looks spectacular in a fairly dim setting, then cleverly lit.  The sofas look cosy and inviting in subdued but clever lighting.

The green midships bar chair looks lost there though - and oh how much I'd love that chair right now, to place next to my precious midships bar coffee table!

Do people prefer the original white balustrades and leather walls or the green balustrades and wood which was put in in 1994.

The white and leather very definitely.  It was "good 60s".  It smacked of luxury and exclusivity.  The green looked like it was from the 1970s and was just odd (all just my own opinions!)

What a view that was when departing the Caronia though - that awesome model so well lit.

A combination of the original white balustrades, maybe the dark blue carpet, the wood, and the model of Lusitania disguised as Mauretania. Half and half I suppose!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

The green version in the second picture is much more to my taste.

I like the green balustrades, but perhaps it is the photo that is capturing more of the staircase that makes it look better.  However I agree with Rob that having the sofa is very inviting and I can imagine sitting there watching the passengers.

Rob I think your wish to have the green Midship Bar chair, should be granted, to compliment your coffee table.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank
