Carnival Cruise Lines
« on: Sep 26, 2018, 11:36 PM »
Oh I remember back in the halcyon days of working on Cunard ships that whenever we encountered a Carnival ship we would look down our noses at it! Having just experienced one of their cruises....I think we were justified!
OK, so we booked a 6 day Bermuda run for the convenience factor as it left from Charleston SC which is a 3 hour drive from home.
Boy Oh Boy, apart from the Wobbles (see my other post) the Ecstacy is 27 years old and showing wear and tear, my experienced eye kept seeing dents and missing panels in deckheads etc, the exterior was streaked with rust and no paint crews apparent, certainly not what we used to see in the old days.
The elevators were decidedly dodgy, either trapping you or announcing the decks in Satanlike tones!
The interior decor was akin to a Galleria shopping mall...see photos.
I will say that generally the crew and staff were very friendly and good at their jobs, although the cruise staff were a bit too much..."You Vill Have FUN!"
Found the mostly Italian officers a bit stand offish and rarely present, maybe Carnival has strict rules..
Entertainment very good as you would expect from such a large company, main shows full of talent and energy, Piano Bar great as were the Russian Violin duet. Ships DJ was totally out of the loop and insisted on playing Rap and Hip Hop despite most pax being middle aged southern US.
Thank goodness we booked a balcony cabin as the lido/pool are was akin to a Zoo with loud music and drunk pax (first ship I've been on where they serve 100 oz beer towers!). The aft decks would have been nice except for the galley exhaust (bad kitchen smell) eminating from the funnel.
Food a bit disappointing, Lido buffet was very un-appetizing, you do have the option of OK Tacos and Burritos or Guy Fieri's under seasoned burgers and over seasoned french fries. Dinner was OK with an extensive menu although after having shelled out for a premium cabin they want to hit you up for an extra charge for surf & turf etc.
Well at least now I know...next time it's Cunard or HAL.....

Thanks Chris for taking time to let us know about your cruise on the Carnival Ecstacy and how it compared to Cunard.  I have mainly cruised with Cunard and the few times I have cruised with other cruise lines I found myself comparing the experience and going back to Cunard, even though there can be things that annoy with the changes they make to compete with other cruise lines.  I remember friends from America cruising with Carnival the year after we met them on QE2 - say no more!
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Sorry to hear about that Chris. I've never travelled with Carnivore, but believe me there are other lines equally as bad, in this cost competitive market: focused on the 'trailer park trash', bogans, chavs, spikers, neds, rascailles or whatever - and providing the minimum of service to keep these types happy. Oh for the days when every passenger on a liner had 'class'; and received commensurate service. <sigh>

Basically, the way we avoid these people is to only book on expensive lines beyond the means of their social security payments.

Sorry to sound like Hyacinth Bucket. Rant over.

Hope you enjoyed Bermadoo  8)

Absolutely agree Boris, I'll admit it, when it comes to cruising I am a bit snobbish, I was only one of three men dressed in a Tuxedo on the formal night.....including staff and officers on the Carnival ship!!!!

Speaking to a good friend of mine who has cruised with Carnival Cruise Lines several times has highlighted to me how very "different" Carnival Cruise Lines and Cunard still are, despite Cunard's drop in standards which is a relative thing. Cunard are still up near the top of the pecking order! I have suggested to my good friend that they could try Cunard but they are unsure given how different the two shipping lines are!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

My brother in law is an enthusiastic cruiser but his criteria are slightly different to mine and include absolutely No dressing up and no foreign food, self service preferred! He would not even consider Cunard! Interestingly though he is teetotal and a nice quiet fellow.
