Hi Michael,

Was this suite on Two Deck, where the big windows (a bit like the windows on Quarter and Upper Decks) were added when the suite was made? Was this during the "Project Lifestyle" refit, from looking at photos over the years?

Thank you!

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

In order to obtain greater revenues from QE2’s deluxe range of accommodation, a plan to create three new luxury suites was implemented during the 1999 refit which resulted in the creation of a new grade of stateroom: QS. This new grade would fit in between Q1 (the Grand Suites) and Q2 (Penthouses). The new suites would rank as some of the most sumptuous suites afloat at that time and offering a similar standard to that found in QE2’s most deluxe rooms, the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth Grand Suites.

A series of original paintings, watercolours and sculptures, in the themes of water, dance and country life, were used to decorate the three new suites.

Caledonia Suite
Boat Deck (Cabin 8200)

The Radio Room was completely removed on the port side of Boat deck (advances in technology with the arrival of GMDSS had rendered the large facility redundant with equipment transferred to the new compact Communications Centre on Two Deck and individual department terminals now installed on the navigation bridge). A new 575-square foot suite (54-square metres), the Caledonia, was built.

This new suite featured living area, separate dining area, bedroom, bar, separate master and guest bathrooms and walk-in wardrobe. Six large feature windows were cut to provide daylight. Luxury fittings and artwork were provided throughout.

Aquitania Suite
   Two Deck (Cabin 2149)

The existing Hotel Managers and Cruise Directors cabins on the starboard side of Two Deck forward of the Midships Lobby were gutted and combined to provide space for the construction of a second suite – the 777-square foot (73-square metres) Aquitania Suite.

The Hotel Manager’s cabin was relocated to Sun Deck.

This new suite featured living area, separate dining area, bedroom, bar, separate master and guest bathrooms and walk-in wardrobe. A mirrored entryway lined with mirrored chests lead in to the new unit. Three large feature windows were cut in the living area to provide daylight. Luxury fittings and artwork were provided throughout.

Carinthia Suite
Two Deck (Cabin 2151)

The existing 463-square foot Midships Suite located on the starboard side of Two Deck aft of the Midships Lobby was totally gutted and enlarged by incorporating the small Conference Room and locker facility off the Midships Lobby to become the location of the third new suite: the 700- square foot Carinthia Suite.

The new suite included the same features as the other new units: living area, separate dining area, bedroom, bar, separate master and guest bathrooms (the existing bathroom was totally re-built) and walk-in wardrobe. A mirrored entryway lined with mirrored chests lead in to the new unit. One additional large feature window was cut in the new bedroom area, to accompany the three windows already the suite. Luxury fittings and artwork were provided throughout. A new front door was provided.

Thank you for the excellent (as always) information, Michael! Was the Hotel Manager's office always on Two Deck (forward), or was it also relocated elsewhere at this point?

I remember in 86 being invited into Pauline Sleighs (The Captains Secretary) office for coffee and to discuss several things . it was an opened ended invite and tucked away in a very quiet spot (except on embarkation/disembarkation day)
I do wonder what she would have made of the office move
The photo shows Pauline on a party cruise as a passenger.

Then there was the time friends had a "bring a champagne bottle party" to their Carinthia Suite..  surprisingly No butler But Esther did a sterling job .

Thank you!

If i remember rightly these were added in the 1999 Bremerhaven refit, when all 3 Cunard large ships were refitted concurrently. Well almost QE2 & RVS arrived together, RVS was finished and was leaving as Vistafjord arrived to be transformed into Caronia. I think QE2 was in for - possibly - over a month, whereas the others were only 2 or 3 weeks.
The contractors for this conversion to Aquitania Suite were a Greek 'gang' who specialised in 'sub standard work' called Ipocampo, they even made 'jerry builders' look good!

Thank you for these photos Michael, did this Suite remain the same through to  2008?
The veneers are superb - and the cornices are extremely attractive.
However, it does look a little more "Savoy" than ship - it's interesting to note that none of the tables have fiddle rails! Did it have its own servants' cabin(s)?

This and the Caledonian suite could make ideal 'museum pieces' to demonstrate the true magic of QE2, couldn't they. It now seems that they'd be in significant contrast with the present 'decor' of QE2 Hotel.

Thomas: you are right, the QE2 is in her re-engining dock. It's called the Kaiser Dry Dock I think.

Rosie: the suites stayed basically the same until 2008 but in 2005 were given new bedspreads in the same design as the Queens Grill cabins - I don't think the yellow suited the surroundings as you will see in the pics below. And the chairs were redone in green leatherette.

Aquitania Suite new bedspread and redone chairs...

Falklands 20th Anniversary Lunch -  Friday 14th June 2002  Southampton.
QE2 had arrived at 0700 from New York and was due to leave at 1700 to return to New York.
As always we were on QE 2 berth but, as we had a MCA Lifeboat Inspection also that day, we came in Stbd side to, instead of the usual Port side to. This meant that the main gangway was at ‘G’ stairway instead of the usual position for S’ton – The Rotunda.
The lunch guests were due to arrive once disembarkation had been completed and, as Chief Security Officer I was ‘tasked’ with meeting Mr & Mrs Thatcher ,escorting them to The Aquitania Suite, where they could ‘freshen up’ under the ever watchful eye of ??, a very senior and trustworthy stewardess.
Their arrival time was scheduled for after the remainder of the dignitaries, and as such the Captain and Staff Captain were already in The Captain’s Cabin. I met them in the Terminal and escorted them up the escalator to the area where joining passengers usually had their photos taken, across the Gangway and onto QE2. Fromm ‘G’ stairway we went along the Stbd 2 Deck corridor to The Midships Lobby and then to The Aquitania Suite, where they were welcomed by ??.    They then entered the Suite and ?? closed the door, leaving myself and the 2 Close Protection Officers [CPO] outside. We had arranged a nearby cabin for the CPO’s to ‘freshen up’.
After some time the CPOs started to get a bit restless, but having worked with the Thatchers for some time were not - yet- panicing. A few minutes later I received a call from the St Capt to call the Captain’s Cabin, to give him and update, which I did. A few more minutes elapsed and still no sign of Mr & Mrs Thatcher, by now they had been onboard for about 15 minutes. Eventually I took the ‘command decision’ to gently knock on the door. ?? answered immediately, and as I looked over her shoulder I saw Mr & Mrs Thatcher sat on a settee watching the TV and looking out over S’ton harbour as happy and relaxed as you like! One of the CPOs gave a tactical cough, and suggested to Mrs Thatcher that, if she was ready, then we would escort them up to the Captain’s Cabin. “Oh yes” was her reply and picking up her hand bag she came towards the door and away we went. Fortunately there was a MAA waiting at ‘A’ staircase to hold the lift to take us up to The Captain’s Cabin.
My next dealings with Mr & Mrs Thatcher were towards the end of lunch, the incident when Carol tried to interrupt her during her speech, I’ll leave to Michael to tell.
As the Aquitania Suite was already occupied for the return trip to NY, a smaller cabin had been allocated on 2 Deck port side aft for Mrs Thatcher to make herself comfortable, prior to the drive back to London. A similar cabin had also been allocated to Mr Thatcher but his was some distance away. The Captain, Paul Wright, escorted Mrs Thatcher while The Staff Captain escorted Mr Thatcher. I accompanied The Captain while one of my MAAs accompanied The St Capt and Mr Thatcher. Mrs Thatcher was only a few minutes in her cabin and then we made our way, the short distance to the ‘G’ stairway gangway.  We waited a couple of minutes, before Mrs Thatcher made some remark about ‘Denis’, turned and said thank-you to The Captain and started to walk up the gangway. As The Captain had to go to the bridge for the passenger drill and pre sailing checks, he told me to escort Mrs Thatcher into the terminal. As the gangway was by now quite steep we had only gone a few paces before she stopped, called me forward and held onto my arm to help her up the gangway. At the top she stopped and looked back down the gangway, but there was still no sign of Denis. She was still holding onto my arm at this point and started walkngi along the terminal looking back towards QE2. I remember her saying to me, “She’s a very beautiful ship, you must be proud to work on her.” By the time we got to the top of the escalator there was still no sign of Mr Thatcher, so Mrs Thatcher decided that she would go down to her official car which was waiting at the bottom, together with her CPO.  Fortunately by the time we got to the vehicle Mr Thatcher appeared at the top of the escalator accompanied by The St Capt, and within a couple of minute they were safely sat in their vehicles and the convoy, escorted by Hants Police outriders left to take then back home.
As we walked back onboard The St Capt explained to me why the delay; apparently Mr Thatcher had spotted the mini bar on entering the cabin and said that he would like a G&T to set him up for the drive home!

I also have a good story about John Cleese and the Caledonia Suite, but that's for another time!

Great memories! Seeing the VIPs from their personal side...  :)

Highly responsible work... I am sure that a lot of preparations preceded visits like these. You must have breathed a sigh of relief after you had seen them safely off again.
