We're all bowled over that we're seeing the QE2 that we knew and loved reappear, especially given some of the previous destructive plans that were put forward.  Based on what we've seen, however, what *small* things would you suggest to improve what they've done?

For me I think they went overboard with the beige carpets in some areas - The Golden Lion in particular I feel needs a darker carpet, and also the wooden floor put back in the area near the bar itself - this is what made it feel like an actual British pub....

I can see that they were trying to "declutter" and freshen up the ship by keeping most of the momorobilia in the terminal building, however I think some of it needs selectively put back to make the ship a bit more special again - e.g. the display cases inside the yacht club, and the large display units outside the toilets at the foot of the stairs going up to the shopping.  They may well be planning this, as the stuck-on graphics look temporary.

We shouldn't judge the incomplete areas (e.g. the Chart Room) until they're finished.

What have your thoughts been?

Likewise I agree, it has an element of tackiness to it in my opinion and is out of character! Lose all those lights - they are secured to the fog horn's mast on the foredeck when stretching to the signal mast!

Perhaps we should not be too critical yet with the tour guides.  I speak from experience regarding tour guides here at Connecticut College.  We are talking about students acting as tour guides who actually go to this school, are instructed what to say, and yet, it is amazing to hear what is sometimes said.  It seems to me that Dubai have done a very good job in trying to stay true to our beloved QE2, and I am hoping that things will go smoother and smoother as time progresses.   :)

I would not want to make judgement or comment.  QE2 is about the experience of being onboard and I hope to be able to stay on the ship and experience QE2 Hotel for myself.  Difficult to give constructive feedback when looking at the pictures or videos.

I remember when the Cunard ship Queen Victoria was commissioned people were making quite rude comments about the carpets and the brown wood, even being so rude as to call the ship "Mrs Brown", but then people went on to love the atmosphere onboard.

I am sure there will be the opportunity for hotel guests and visitors to give feedback.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

I'm waiting too!  However it's just possible that I shall never see QE2 again  :(

Rob - as you are making enquiries,
The possible collection of fine books apparently in the "Foyer" - hopefully these can go into the Library asap!

Edited later, to add a query about the contents of the Heritage collection.
Hopefully this is already in a closely controlled air-conditioned space?

Regarding the... inaccuracies:  It could be that nobody has actually explained those things to them yet and they really believe what they have been saying...?

To be clear, I am not criticizing the specific tour guide on the video we've all be discussing (or any tour guide onboard!). My issue is that the same "untruths" that are in the press release were also repeated in the tour guide's comments.

So the problem comes from higher up. The desire to better align the ship with UK's Monarch may vary well be in line with the hotel's marketing scheme, and it is this that I take issue with, not the tour guide.

QE2 has a rich history -- intwined with HM QEII but not parallel to exactly -- and the history of the vessel and those who actually sailed on her are much more interesting that any made up stuff.

I feel like this particular distinction that I am making is getting misinterpreted.

1. Correct the inaccuracies in their tour - make sure everything they say is factually correct - not designed to make their clientele oo and ah.
2. As Rob suggested - get some of the memorabilia back on board - I felt in some of the shots I looked at that she looks a little "sparse" in places? Minimalist is OK to a point but as I said perhaps a little too much.
3. Hoping that the decks currently closed are open soon. The Queens Room still looks stunning but again needs some furniture!
4. And now for the engineer in me - sort out some way of opening an engine room and perhaps the ECR to the public? Same with the bridge. ie a behind the scenes tour. Shes totally intact (except for bow thrust machinery which you'd never see as a punter anyway) from this point of view.
5. Step away from the bling at all times - they've managed it so far so keep it up!

The remaining decks will be open in October or by October from what we know (the Caronia Restaurant is having major work done as we speak for example - like a major refit in the past). The bridge is planned to be open for tours from what I've been told, but is far from ready (the bridge wings specifically) even though it looks much like it did in 2008 (from seeing very recent photos from inside and outside the bridge itself, some that cannot be made public). The ECR and Engine Rooms for tours are apparently in the pipeline after the bridge.

Having said that I think tours will have to be guided due to wanting to preserve (hopefully) the relevant areas of the ship (not like on HMS Belfast and Queen Mary for example where people are free to tour the bridges if open etc) and because of access to the bridge at least (up through the rabbit warren from a long staircase starting from Boat Deck A stairwell for example) where personally I wouldn't want things reconfigured for any reason as the rabbit warren is part of her character for example.

Get the lighting right - use your fancy new lighting effectively.   All the public rooms need to be dimmed down in the evening - all the restaurants and bars.  Its utterly essential.  The same goes for the promenades.  This isn't just a case of us wanting to keep it the same as Cunard did - its what you do in a hotel.  On Cunard QE2, the lighting was programmed, so that large areas could be changed to "evening" at the touch of a button...

One of the reasons for this seems to be because of the whiter, starker new lighting (almost like fluorescent lighting, that would likely be LEDs for energy saving) but the new lighting is dimmable apparently...they just need to dim it now!!! The tungsten, orangey lighting she used to have was easier on the eyes at a similar brightness so I suspect the new lighting will have to be turned down quite a bit more.

I know they can't have gambling in Dubai, but can't they turn the lights on in the machines and signs?  They look dead as they are, and unlike they were when in service.

And that is the problem with energy saving lighting, it's too severe so will need to be dimmed a lot more as it may well already be dimmed a bit!

Having looked at pictures of the Golden Lion there doesn't seem to be any TVs/projector screens? I would've thought that, now she's anchored down in one place, they'd want to be able to show sports (whether in English or Arabic, from what I've read you can get both for the Premier League) in the pub.

Current cruise ships have the TVs and projectors for sports when at sea so there's little to no excuse for Dubai!

Especially since it's something that could heavily influence traffic and the profitability of the place - if customers can't watch the World Cup on board then where will they go?

Even as far back as 2005, when i was on Ocean Village, we had live Premiership football on a Saturday, it came via something called  'raw feed', basically pictures only and the receiving TV company added their own commentary.
We used to get 3 games on a Saturday, lunch time KO, afternoon KO and evening KO and then whatever was being played on the Sunday. The Sports Bar was always full, mainly as OV was predominantly aimed at the Brit market.

A 'crew joke' on OV was that; Formal Night was your football teams home shirt, & informal was their away shirt!

I did have a good look last night, I can’t see any screens in the Golden Lion, or anywhere else in the public areas...

With regards to the casino and space, my take is they are trying very hard to maintain the original feel
of the ship, and space here is not currently an issue...

Almost everyone I speak to is keen to point out how hard they’ve worked to preserve everything...my view is they have succeeded, if you can come and have a look and decide for yourselves...

Cheers,

Alex

I didn't like their noises either, nor the fact that the casino blocked at least that side of Upper Deck for walking along as a child and in most cases as using the casino as a corridor/indoor promenade wasn't really appreciated. Glad the area has been opened up a bit for this reason but it's good the gambling machines have been preserved as part of her history (even though not original to the ship).

Somebody on Twitter posted this (below).  I think I know what they mean.  By making the ship cleaner, fresher and more modern, they've also removed a lot of the apparent quality and luxury - examples I'd give are blinds/curtains, lighting and carpet choice.  The sort of thing that differentiates a high-end hotel, from a functional Premier Inn or Travel Lodge.  Too harsh?

Travelodge is a very good business model for what it offers, the customer is able to customise their stay with many things or simply just have a room to rest their heads, and at very varying prices
.
I doubt we could say that some of QE2s curtains or carperts were luxury. Some of those curtains or blinds did  a good job of hiding some of the states of the windows.
Those of us that remember the very dark carpet and white hand rails ,now that was luxury and a lovely thick carpert  ( was it black or a very dark blue) The Midships bar with the Green always looked Luxury, The Golden Lion, lets face it was a dump and l never liked it. The old Columbia in its hey day l always thought just reeked of luxury , the pink race chairs ok the carpet was a bit crazy , But l think the bit that always stood out as being luxury was The Midships Lobby ..that was always pure class.
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,

One of the issues is she's so quiet, or was when we visited...we more or less had her to ourselves!  The crew were great, but there only a few of them, she needs hundreds more people on board, just to feel alive.  Some areas felt untouched, but others definitely now clean and modern...and there is a lot of very new and very cream carpet, not too much furniture and bare walls where once there was art, noticeboards, signs etc etc...

We were repeatedly reminded of the soft opening, they are experimenting with releasing cabins for booking and were clearing up some technical issues, like A/C and hot water, so didn't want to go to fast, too soon.  I do think lots of people will add to her sense of character, as will having a "Captain" again, which is something they have planned - I believe an ex-Cunard crew member, who will be in uniform and tour the ship.

The A/C now comes from a new plant shore-side, but it's channeled down the original pipework, which has lots of "dampers" which used to be hydraulically controlled, but are now electronic apparently - this is where the glitches lie, we were told.  It was 43 deg outside and parts of the ship were very comfortable, but others a bit warm!

I do recall thinking the windows, frames etc were in very good condition now, in all the areas I saw...in fact the overall structure of the ship is looking fabulous, especially from afar, but the devil is in the detail...

We were told the midships carpet was changed from red due to cultural reasons, but that area looks fabulous to me and the small wooden surround to the column was placed there to enable the original column to be retained as it had sustained some damage at some point, now presumably hidden by the wood.

I don't think they plan to put curtains or blinds back on the large windows, instead they are all being coated with a plastic film, which I think is to block UV light...once it's on, you can't see it.

On a different note, I wonder if the owners have considered flying signal flags from her mast?

I'm thinking GBTT on one side and QE2 on the other. Wouldn't cost much (or anything, really) but could be quite a nice touch!

Excellent idea given she can't have GBTT painted on her as it was in her later years. However, would flying the relevant flags breach the callsign rules as well? Would be interesting to know.

Is she still bound by maritime protocol? I know both HMS Belfast and Cavalier still fly their callsign, and as GBTT is out of use it should be okay.

Conay, Hi!

Do you mean her nautical flags?
Golf   - I require a pilot
Bravo - I am taking in / discharging dangerous goods
Tango - Keep clear of me
Tango - Keep Clear of me

Her new call sign would show
Zulu - I require a tug
Charlie - Affirmative
Echo - I am altering my course to starbord
Foxtrot - I am disabled, communicate with me
2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ICS_Pennant_Two.svg
So - Maybe a foxtrot with the tugs, round (and round to STBD) could be her best effort yet!

"Golf Bravo Tango Tango" on one line, "Quebec Echo 2" on another. Similar to how HMS Belfast has C35 (the pennant number) on one line and GGCN (her callsign) on the other.

All they really need to do is add a motor and adjust it to speed. OR they could set up radar again?

I would doubt that her radar is actually fully decommissioned? Maybe just trying switching the thing on again!

In photos of the bridge, the radar displays are still there but are covered by a paper notice (each of them) but I cannot make out what they say and cannot make the photos public unfortunately. Maybe Alex or anyone else who's visited her bridge recently can tell us what the paper notices say and maybe say what will happen with the radars which appear to still be there and intact?

Hi Thomas... the notice says “DO NOT TURN ON RADARS TODAY”...

So my advice would be to leave it to tomorrow, then flick the switch!!

I didn’t see any lights on anywhere on the bridge, however everything else around the ship seemed to be working. I have no idea, but given the rugged nature of radars and the relatively simple mechanism, I’d have thought there is a good chance they’d still work?

You beat me to it Alex! I just looked at the photos I have again and read that message on the notice very clearly! But I wonder if that's out of date given the rewiring of the ship in places and even simple mechanisms deteriorating due to not needing maintenance and the environment, particularly during the cold layup?

I have also noticed wiring/cable work going on within the forward bridge console's internal parts with the panels open and wires/cables dangling out so I suspect the systems won't be active ever again due to not being needed and they are in the process of being disconnected (but its not a priority for them at the moment) - so not seeing lights on the above consoles may be normal now. A more limited rewiring of the bridge may be underway however if needed?

A lovely looking and big buffet was shown off earlier (dressed overall with Union Flags too!) in a live video on the official Instagram page. Made me hungry  :P
