Wear and Tear....Denting on top of the ship
« on: Feb 04, 2018, 03:38 AM »
Here's one for the engineers/deck folks..... why are the upper casings around the funnel and top of the wheelhouse so damaged. Very noticeable in the photo below. I know that the area in front of the funnel was used as a crew sunbathing area....did human feet cause all that????

Maybe something to do with ageing of the aluminium and it's exposure to the elements over the years?
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

These two areas were 'out of bounds' to sunbathers, due to the Penthouses/Engineers cabin/Wheelhouse below, although they were walked on by crew undertaking maintenance, ie painting etc.

I walked here in Dubai in 2011 - I was told the metal was very thin, and was told exactly where I could walk.  Thin metal doesn't really stay perfectly flat, even without damage - is that it?

Yes there was a 'pathway' for essential users to follow.

By coincidence, seeing as we have this photo available, if you look at the aft satellite dish, to it's right as you look from above, port side of the ship, there is a square box. It was underneath this box that we found the 'E' stairway tapestries when they were 'vandalised'.

Min thickness of Aly used I thin was 3/8" Usually 1/2" and up. I would have said that and have never been told weathewise it was not safe to walk on, In terms I would say temperature while welding/operating. Temps if the plate is welded  say at 54degrees point a on the plate to point b on the stiffener when the 2 pieces of metal reached the same temp you had movement.
When big portions of plating, garbage room to door comes to mind, the plates area around were heated
