QE meets QE

HMS Queen Elizabeth meets mv Queen Elizabeth.

Anyone have any insight on why there are two islands on HMS QE?  I would assume one is for conning the ship and the other for flight operations but I am curious on the logic of why these weren't combined as in other aircraft carriers.

You are correct Bob.
I am told that the 2 island concept has a few reasons for being.
QE is non nuclear so requires a funnel. To put that in one island would almost double the size both forward to aft and port to starboard.
Both island can be used to do either job of conning the ship or flight ops. If one island is made unusable by battle damage, say the one islad can do both jobs at the same time.
I am sure there are other reasons but thats all I have at the moment.

Not to pull things off topic but all US carriers prior to the USS Nimitz except for USS Enterprise were non-nuclear and incorporated the funnel into the island structure without the islands being much bigger than HMS QE.  I'm thinking the reason may lie in the functionality and/or function redundancy.  The unique configuration makes for easy recognition though!

The Royal Navy have made full use of this, Cunard must have had their mind elsewhere....  They pull out all the bells and whistles when Three Queens meet, or nearly meet or even when two Queens meet and make the best use of the publicity. This time the publicity  seems a bit lame, like a wet flag on a rainy day, limp and lifeless.

According to a friend from Liverpool;


"I met some passengers who disembarked from Queen Elizabeth (Cunard) at Liverpool yesterday. They said that their cruise ship met up HMS Queen Elizabeth off the coast of Invergordon and spent about 20 minutes circling each other sounding their klaxons and cheers from the navy crew. The passengers were told that it will some years in the future before the two QE.s will meet up again. It must have been some sight."
