This is mortifying, and sadly poignant and historical given she is/was the last liner or even cruises ship of any size built in the UK. I checked up on her on Maritime AIS tracking late last year and early this year when her destination was rumoured to be Singapore if I recall correctly. I'm shocked this happened so quickly to a ship that as far as I'm aware was SOLAS compliant but had had main engine problems which in hindsight sealed her fate with SAGA and altogether.
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last stepped foot and sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2, in her new life, in Dubai back in January 2020.

That was also my thought when I saw it, I was still hoping for some miracle, since I actually liked the looks of this ship, don't know why.

It does not seem that this should have happened at all, let alone this fast.

What a terrible fate for any ship, let alone Ruby !  :'(

I read recently that the reason she ended up being scrapped so soon and quickly was that the owners who spent loads of money (millions) attempting to turn her into a hotel eventually went bankrupt and just sold her I presume to try and recover some of their investment (or the creditors did so on their behalf as well as selling off their assets). The engine problems she had in the end with Saga would have sealed her fate in regards to further ocean going service, unfortunately.

It's a shame she didn't have the much more dignified ending Saga Rose (the old Sagafjord) was given by being recycled away from (most) prying eyes in a dry dock of sorts in mainland China.

Years ago, many times, a ship would return to her builder's yard or to another shipyard to be dismantled (broken up). While this was also a very sad occasion for a well known and popular ship, it was a more "die with dignity" ending than being unceremoniously run aground in a distant land and being torn apart.

Peter Knego announced on his website that he was not going after items from the Saga Ruby/Vistafjord as most of the original fittings had been removed during the hotel refit and replaced by low quality Malaysian items!!!!

Hi Chris -do you (and/or Peter K, if you are in touch) know whether her Builders' Plate (as Vistafjord), her Bell and the magnificent collection of plaques awarded to her foe each and every maiden voyage etc were left on board?
Thanks,
Rosie
QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

Don't know where all that has gone, the last photos showed the plaques still in place.
Re- the Bell, apparently the origional bell had been badly modified to show all three ship names.
Apparently the ship breaking yard owner loves to keep all the bells and builders plates that come his way!

Reminds you of the SS Canberra when she was broken up
I do wonder if perhaps they started from the stern might it be less grotesque
To me it looks as though the ship is being eaten away by a cancer...thoroughly  hellish :'( :'( :'(

She had more miles to go!

Sorry to nitpick and be very pedantic, but if we look at things clinically and unsentimentally like Carnival's accountants do, she had major engine problems (failures with one of the gearboxes if I recall correctly) in the end with Saga. As a result she would not have gone many more miles as a seagoing ship without major amounts of money being thrown at her problems. I however agree, if done right (which unfortunately it wasn't), she could have been a very successful tied up hotel ship (powered via shore power) somewhere in the world. Also I agree it's such a waste of a piece of history let alone a great opportunity and she had lots of potential with years of service all be it in a different static role.

The above is irrespective to her SOLAS status which was up-to-date.
