So..its taken 2 years and 110 manpower (we are assuming this is number of men working and not number of hours worked on project )

Lifeboats discarded on the quayside
Life boat Davits cut away and dumped on quayside
Wash and brush up
Mulit coloured lights hung from strategic points
Some cabins having work done on them...

Lets not open the champagne yet...   :o
or am l completely missing the point ?

I am confident but for me I will be dancing in delight when and if she is connected to the electricity grid and connected to the water and sewage systems.

And quite rightly so..Its the QE2 for gods sake  >:(, are we just supposed to sit here and accept carte blanche, accept all the lies that have been peddled out over the years . This is a discussion forum to discuss things, we post things and we discuss things, we may not like what we hear, we may not like whats being said, but that the beauty of it.

I am loath to say it... but we have seen timelines before, and there is no telling whether this one is better than previous ones.

And yet, hope springs eternal, QE2 is still there, her funnel intact, and so we shall wait and see, hoping for the best, and my own feeling is just a bit more hopeful than it has been for many a year. Louis, your contacts in Dubai and the photos they enable you to share with us, are very helpful in this regard too, as we can see or guess a little bit of what may or may not be going on. And above all, we know that there are many people in Dubai keeping a watchful eye on her!

This company is only in charge of the Public Rooms and Passenger Cabins the work should be done by the handover in August 2017.

IF she is being partially converted into a hotel then l wonder at what stage they will be looking to accept bookings or what about a soft opening with invited guests to test the system ? before it all goes live. with any task of opening a new/converted hotel on a large scale  the last thing you want to do is open to paying guests and for things not to be working.

Of course if shes not going to be a hotel  ..... ::)

Generally with such hotel openings there is usually some hype to create a buzz. Lets hope the way QE2 has been handled they dont create another set of "oh here we go again" .Its all very well saying nothing during the transformation process, but as the process nears the end you do need to create some interest in what the guest can be expected to see, feel and experience

Granted  it might not be on a Vegas scale of hype and sensation blasting but when they open the grande mega structures they do it with a certain style and wow factor.

Why for once don't they show some imagination, instead of being forever alongside (when she is finally finally definitively  finished)
anchor her in the centre of the maria or even further out, & let the minted guests arrive by her own tenders, let em see & gawp in amazement at her bulk, she might even just every so often get a little movement with the swell.
Also peeps would see her at all angles from said tenders, am sure leccy water & sewage could be sorted what's not to like  :-X

Given that this August date has not been given officially by her managers, and was first posted on that website at least 5 months ago, I'm sure it'll just get extended or replaced with a later project date.  She's clearly still a long, long way from opening.

It's a shame the teak doesn't match with the rest, as also noticeable on Google Maps satellite photos, is it a different type or treated/varnished differently?. I suppose at least they used teak and not something else, or heaven forbid gone down to the bare metal!. They should call it One Deck now in keeping with the rest of the deck inside QE2.

I for one am glad concrete progress on her is finally being made after 9 long years in Dubai, I do however wonder like many others here on the forum as to how much of the QE2 we knew and love will be left when conversion/refurbishment work is complete maybe next year or in 2019?

Yes, Deck One swimming pool aft, gone. At least something is happening and it is better than seeing her sit and deteriorate. Let's hope they show other parts of the refurbishment in due course. Who knows, 'we' may be able to walk some of her decks in years to come. Let's hope & pray we can.

And so it begins (or is in full effect).  Piece by agonizing piece she will be transformed and become less of what she was - a glorious ship and historic icon - to become more of a mere backdrop to some business' bottom line.  Very sad.  She should have been scrapped in 2009; the mourning would well be over by now and it would certainly have been a much more dignified end.

If I'm right in saying the reason the pool was removed was because of Dubai's strict religious rules on not wearing much in public, not least the dusty/sandy conditions that would potentially hinder use of the outside pool and Jacuzzis.

Was wondering why the pool was removed. It is interesting that they removed it in a city that reaches up to 120 degrees.

A combination of sand, dust and grit would deter anyone from using a outside pool there. Best to use a indoor one. I also would not recommend another situation where there is a magarodome..

Brandon - I thought you were talking about over boiling point temperatures at first :P Then I remembered your using Degrees Fahrenheit instead of Degrees Celsius we use here in the UK.

Trevor - Another Magrodome doesn't seem to feature in their plans, thank goodness! They seem to not want her to have any outside pools for the reasons already mentioned. Wonder if they'll keep the indoor pools on Seven Deck (not Deck Seven, as called on QM2 - Seven Deck has a better ring to it in my opinion) given their strict religious laws?.

Anyway, sorry if I'm going more and more off topic!

The removal of the pool has nothing to do with religious,it was removed because it does not fit in the concept.I have said here before deck space is needed.

The indoor will not be removed

A couple of weeks ago, I asked Captain Cooper (2009 to end 2012) if he'd ever been tempted to fix the pool for themselves to use.

He said yes, once they'd got everything else under control, they looked into it, but by then all the pipework had rotted, and it was too big a job to fix it.

There's no doubt it is much cheaper and easier to board it over (hopefully the tank is still below...) and then cheaper going forward too.  They could have taken the SS Rotterdam route (turned it into a paddling pool, but at least it would look right in photos) but if they'd actually restored it, that would also mean people using it - which means changing rooms etc.  My mental vision for Hotel QE2 had the Gym/Spa in the former Lido, which was because the pool was close by, that made sense to me.  All the decks above could be used for outdoor events.

So I'm upset its gone - I loved that pool - and its another way in which she doesn't look right now BUT I'm trying to keep an open mind - there's no doubting thats a cracking big bit of open deck space now to hold any sort of event on.

The removal of the pool has nothing to do with religious,it was removed because it does not fit in the concept.I have said here before deck space is needed.

The indoor will not be removed
Good. I don't see a pool coming outside.. way too hot in Dubai..

Very interesting, yet sad information regarding the pool.

Hmm, not too sure I agree with that!  Lots of silly Brits spend a lot of time by/in/on the water in Dubai - that's why they go.  At the height of summer, yes it crazy hot, but some of the rest of the year is very pleasant.  I was in Majorca earlier this year and it got to 34C most days - and either you could stay stuck inside with the AC on or.... you could wallow pleasantly in the pool (which I did for hours at a time!).

She should have been scrapped in 2009

Agreed. Whilst a beach at Alang is not the most dignified way to go it does give resolution :)

And the August date mentioned for the handover has come and gone..and where are we...
As is to be expected ...none further ahead... should we be surprised..No we shouldnt be
Thanks Louis for the Video... Clearly they have spare no expense in its production  ::).  As we know absolutely nothing of what is being done or has been done.
Should we be clapping our hands at the progress of the removal of the pool...all this time and thats what they are showing .
They can build skyscrapers in a record time, but QE2 and whatever they are trying to do is for whatever reason(s) taking an eternity.

They have an ideal chance with QE2 turning 50 for a great piece of Public Realtions...or are they simpy going to miss the boat with that.

From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

To be fair on the Dubai owners, and as Davina has stated multiple times, Al Shafa are a sub-contractor on the overall project and just completed their part of it. The other sub-contractors etc. are still very much at work and work overall is far from finished (particularly with the plans for the shoreside lift and permanent gangway to the Midships Lobby that haven't even started construction yet as far as can be told from photos).

We're looking at Hotel QE2 opening late next year or more likely during 2019.

Yeah Greg, round here June, July, August and some of September we are doing 36-38 degrees in whatever that celsius thing is. Thats why we have pools. Then they go into the Jacuzzi at 40 degrees.

If nothing else, the video shows every slide transition available in Powerpoint!

It's also the closest footage we have seen since Rob's visit - which is a pity since it shows what has gone.
