Where?
« on: Jan 29, 2017, 03:36 PM »

I know it's too late or the January photo competition but i found this photo in my flash drives and thought that, instead of entering it,  that i'd test your knowledge of World Cruises!

It was taken around 1800/30 in March 2005, but where?

If you've seen it before then it was not by my posting.

I entered it in a crew photo competition onboard QE2 and won, but several years later i found it being used 'illegally' as someone else's entry in another photo competition!!

Beautiful photo, Andy, and well worth a prize! There may be other competitions coming up with a suitable topic :) .

Where... The timing of 18.30 in March does not give anything away, as this would have been around the equinox, and it would not be an unexpected time for dusk to have set in.

All we can see is that this was not an anchor port...

Looking at the itinerary of March 2005 the port could be Port Kelang or Colombo

I think it's Mumbai.

The hills in the background look remarkably similar to those in this picture:

Sorry Peter, you are about 8890 nautical miles out which, sailing at a steady 10 knots, would take you 37 days and 1 hour!

Well... none of the places listed for QE2 in March 2005 are that far away from Mumbai?

Is the date of March 2005 in fact correct or not?

Tahiti frequently has cloud down over the mountains...
Being near the equator - dawn and dusk are nearly equidistant in time
We'll say Papeete!

Please, to Everyone - do join in!

And the prize goes to YOU!

Well spotted and deduced.

I'll post a couple more phots taken on the same call later on today.

Apologies Peter, it was indeed January 2005, 27th to be precise and taken at 1855.

5 extra duties and 30 minutes on the 'naughty stair' for me!!!

remind me, when we meet!)

...and the next Photo for this excellent topic 'Where?' is from??

That first one is a beauty -- I wish you could enter it in the photo competition and win, so that we can include it in a calendar!

So here are a couple more photos to test your knowledge of QE2's itinerary and locations around the World.

These two photos were taken during the 2005 World Cruise and, about 3 hours apart, when QE2 was at anchor, but where?

Hi Andy Holloway,

QE2 was at anchor off the Island of Moorea in the Pacific Ocean, wasn't she?!
Kind regards,
Rosie

Correct and as they used to say  on the Shipping Forecast on BBC Radio there was 'precipitation in sight' as per the photo, in fact i got so wet on returning to the ship that i had to change into some dry uniform even before i could go for lunch!!

A lovely location and one which, had i unlimited amounts money to allow me to travel anywhere in the world, i'd go back again.

Please do keep it going!
QE2 Anywhere is worth looking at - ...and Moorea was just a bit too easy!
Have you ever counted the number of ports of call you made with her?
Thanks so much for this Topic ;D

(PS...and if it's allowed / appropriate (strictly no names/places ) a few stories about what happened to the Naughty People in The Brig (there is a Topic) and beyond would be "interesting"! For example, is it true that no matter where, being drunk and disorderly resulted in instant dismissal, no matter what rank etc (very understandable if this was the case!) - Stories abound about lonely young naive crew-members being left on the quayside etc. etc. )
