SS United States to be sunk as a reef
« on: Oct 08, 2024, 10:44 PM »
Well it appears to be the end of the line for the SSUS.

I just hope Dubai don't get any ideas.... They have lovely warm waters for diving!

It would be kinda nice if they removed the iconic funnels and her lettering and it them somewhere. But its still a sad end

I wanted to update everybody on what has happened. I'm sure everybody already knows, but the SSUSC signed an agreement to have the ship sunk as an artificial reef in Florida. At least one of the funnels is going to be removed and placed in a land-based museum for the ship and its history. It's really bittersweet to hear, but it's a done deal. I got to visit and tour her back in 2016 and have some photos posted here somewhere on the forum if I can find them. https://news.usni.org/2024/10/16/ss-united-states-getting-towed-to-norfolk-ahead-of-planned-sinking-off-florida-coast

They are actually going to put at least one of her funnels in a land-based museum according to the deal signed. https://news.usni.org/2024/10/16/ss-united-states-getting-towed-to-norfolk-ahead-of-planned-sinking-off-florida-coast

Oops! I posted this before I saw that someone had started a thread on the ship's future already. My bad!

No problem Hank, the posts are now merged with this topic about  SS United States to be sunk as a reef.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Amazing aerial views of what looks a beautiful ship. Imagine how she would look with a fresh lick of paint , or even freshly painted funnels.

Can we have an "appreciate" button as well as the "like" button?

I don't feel comfortable "liking" that she is to be sunk...

Her last voyage can be tracked here:

What a pity. She's still beautiful.

Destin in French means Fate. Quite an appropriate name for her resting place...

Very sad.

Why not do what they did with the SS Norway, chop the front of the bow off and make it a display in Philly somewhere. Even now seeing that Bow photo strikes fear, horror and sadness into a ship that means very little to me. Thats what you want to achieve in some small way with such a memory.
