Waverley turns 70
« on: Oct 04, 2016, 02:57 PM »
On Oct 2nd 1946 Waverley was launched into the River Kelvin from the Pointhouse Shipyard of A&J Inglis, Glasgow.
She was ordered as a replacement for her namesake (1899 from same shipbuilder) which was sunk during the Dunkirk Evacuations in 1940.

Little did anyone know at the time how famous and loved this wee boat would become!

The old girl celebrated her 70th birthday on Sunday 2nd Oct - how time flies. I remember celebrating her 60th - where has the time gone!

More here (including some excellent build shots): http://www.paddlesteamers.org/national/waverley-reaches-her-70th/

Waverley is currently in the midst of her short season on the River Thames where every voyage she requires tug assistance in the Pool of London.
The photos posted below were taken from tug Devout which was attending Waverley last weekend and is from the excellent Facebook page The Liquid Highway - which contains many photos and videos posted from the tugs working London's river. Unsurprisingly there is a lot of Waverley content just now.

The photos give the viewer a tugman's view of Waverley as he takes the towing line on board and finally a view of the old girl dressed fore and aft in celebration of her 70th year!!

Lang may yer lums reek auld freen!

A very Happy Anniversary to PS Waverley!
Thank you so much for the nudge - and wouldn't it be good to help her celebrate this, albeit a 'few' months later when we also gather next year for QE2!
Please, if you know who will be planning next year's itinerary/navigation plans -  maybe they might let us come and pay her a visit on The River Clyde on Sept 23rd??
Wouldn't it add considerably to both Waverley's kudos, remembering the times when she escorted QE2,
and to the clan of her supporters!
Maybe a Tartan, in black white and red could be designed for the Grand Occasion! :)

Hello everyone, recently we took a trip from our home town of Liverpool to Llandudno aboard Waverley. Here is my small film of
the trip, I hope it brings back a memory for those interested.

Hi Rosie,

Nice idea however Waverley will be on the South Coast sailing out of Southampton at that time so the logistics and costs (2/3 days light steaming costs and associated lost revenue) of sailing her back to the Clyde for one day wouldn't add up financially I'm afraid.
The South Coast and Thames seasons are very good for the coffers.

Thank you, G!

So - just wondering, as having booked for 4 nights up close to Waverley's station on the Clyde, what/ where else we might find to have a Super Saturday, after what promises to be a Fantastic Friday :)

Maybe we should rent-a-boat!

There is this https://scottishmaritimemuseum.org/irvine-2/ which is just a half hour train ride away from Glasgow Central with four trains an hour...  It is certainly in keeping with the topic of the event, i.e. important historic vessels...

Hi Alan -

Your video is marvelous ! Waverley moves along at a good clip, doesn't she ? I especially liked the engine room section.

It must have been a memorable outing. Thanks for making the video and sharing it with us !
