What do you think?  Is Crystal Cruises plan to put the SS United States back to sea a good idea?

A missed opportunity to stick another 3 decks atop , surely she's worth keeping  'as is'.( or sadly as was) because that's what it's all about , don't they get it?

It has to be a good idea, if it ever happens, surely the hotel proposal would have happened by now.... Otherwise the inevitable is just around the corner .

It's a great idea - there is no way they will find the money required to turn her into a hotel - and history shows that floating ex cruise ship hotels don't work.

It's either this or the scrap yard, and I know which I think is preferable, by a country mile.

That's why we're so very lucky to have the sublime SS Rotterdam!

What you said is actually what the former project manager of QE2 Dubai said.  His sums showed it was easier to show a profit on a return to service, even with the epic costs (I think he said £200m) than as a hotel (with lower initial costs).

I wish Crystal Cruises will be hugely successful and happy and make loads of money with the refitted SS United States.

Then perhaps Cunard will start considering buying QE2 back! ;D

There are only a handful of ocean liner hotels and museums in existence. In addition to that reality, it might allow the Conservancy to formulate a plan for the SS United States Post-Crystal, should the Crystal plan go through. It would be easier to plan for a stationary role in the future without having to worry about short-term dock costs and imminent scrapping in the way. If the ship has a future service life of 20-25 years, and the Conservancy has occasional fundraisers and generates enough money from the museum, perhaps there a future after the future. That is all speculation and dreaming, but it's a cause I'd have no problem donating to.
SS United States forever.
