Port Rashid Future Plans (?)
« on: Jan 19, 2016, 02:23 PM »
First time I come across these new plans for Port Rashid

Top photo Port Rashid in 2012 with QE2 docked in the inner part, below is the new concept of Port Rashid in the future with QE2 docked as a hotel roughly in the same place as in 2012.Google Image roughly in the same angle as the concept one.

Any ideas about these new plans?

This is very, very interesting !  The video is new, is it not, as are the developer's plans ?

Interesting indeed.

Looks more realistic and down to earth than some previous projects.

I like how QE2 is keeping her original external appearance - no glass funnel, no extra decks, no "designer delirium".

The only thing that worries me is that without massive internal work I think she can only be turned into some kind of budget hotel.

Is there really a need of a budget hotel in this place? I hope it's not just a temporary solution for QE2 to make some money before being sent for scrap as soon as the sale contract restriction comes to an end.

Sorry if this sounds a bit negative, but after so many years, we've learned to be careful.

Interesting video. I wish it was QE2 sailing into the sunset out of Dubai but hey-ho,  ain't a lot else on offer. Don't like it one bit.

Looking further into the visiondubia FB page  they show a computer generated view of Port Rashide with Cruise liners moored as at the moment with QE2 moved across from her her present position to the opposite side of basin

Well.... this certainly explains all that sand they've been dumping in the harbour doesn't it?

"Mina Rashid (Cruise Terminal)" - "Port Rashid" will be redeveloped and turn into a cruise terminal (All cargo operations will move to Jebel Ali Port). Also, part of the port will be reclaimed by Nakheel to create a vibrant mixed use urban waterfront that will house 200,000 residents. With a built-up area of 6,000,000 ft², "Harbour Boulevard" is a huge part of this project. - by FCF Architecture & DAR

The site also shows some pictures of the planned development.

The first fairly sensible plans I've seen in recent years. Let's hope this one gets off the ground and QE2 can be visited for many years to come.

Dubai to receive 575,000 cruise passengers

Quote
Operator DP World is building a fourth terminal and will eventually connect them all with a mini tube system. It is part of a wider Port Rashid Marina project announced by the global terminal operator which will have the fabled QE2 as its permanently moored centrepiece, reportedly offering museum style luxury accommodation, around a superyacht hub incorporating mixed-use residential and retail space.

Presumably the "museum style luxury accommodation" means on board QE2 herself?
