Hey Lachlan - and G'd-day, by the way!
Seeing it in the context of a room etc, Your Ship is absolutely magnificent, and quite long / big!

Are you still requiring info re 3-D Printing?
I now have the name of the person who showed me the Prototype Room at the College of Art
and hopefully, can still contact him before the end of the Summer term.
That is unless Robert ('Waverley') has already been in touch with you regarding help with the Tenders, model design and printing etc.

Thinking of Models of QE2 - might yours break the record for size?
I'll take a look at the general Models of QE2 topic - Yours might be even bigger than any of the Builders' Models which are still in existence!

Just pondering now- Where is it destined for....?
(Ssh! In the beginning (2013) you did mention the word 'monster')
How Will You Move it?
Towage, Tug, Trailer...Removals van etc ;)

and what might also be good would be to have the Progress Booklet (here on TQS) with chronological illustrations, as well as details in print!
As said in the UK, 'No Pressure', though!
All the very best - and Much respect! :)

Hi Rosie,
Yes I am still pursuing the 3d printing and have found someone here in Melbourne who can do the CAD modelling and do the printing so I am hoping I am organised in that department. Thank you for thinking about this.

No it doesn't break any records for size. In the first place, I am aware of other models at the same scale as mine. Secondly, the next step up from 1/96 scale (1/8 of an inch to a foot) is 1/48 scale which is, obviously, twice the size. The model in the transport Museum in Glasgow is probably 1/48 scale so, as far as I know, that is the record holder.

Where the model is destined to live can be a contentious question. The model of Oriana (also 1/96 scale so about 300mm shorter than QE2) is in our home in a good spot in an elaborate all-glass case. We haven't discussed where QE2 will live, but I think it would be possible, by throwing enough money at the glass case, to 'double-stack' the two models. The case would have to be longer but no wider. Oriana and QE2 were both the same width - Panamax or about 100 feet. At the moment there is a presumption in our household that the QE2 model won't be finished for ages so we don't have to think about where it will live just yet.But that's what we thought about the other model, too.

As to moving the model, the Oriana just fitted into a car we had then with the seats folded down and all sorts of padding. That car has been unceremoniously banished since then and QE2 would not have fitted into it anyway. So we will use a small truck which we use in our business to transport it when it's finished.

And I have to admit I don't know what you mean by "the Progress Booklet (here on TQS)..."

Cheers Rosie,
Lachlan

There is also one in the museum at the port of Cherbourg

Hi Rob,

Yes it probably will be, or at least could be finished by September 2017 but transportable....I'm sure it could be done depending on how and how far it would going. Anything can be done by throwing enough money at it.
It would be a large delicate thing to transport. Why do you ask?

Rob, I think I know where you are going with this one,  Me'n'Mrs Pete are still hoping to go see our son this November, a visit to see Lachlan is on the cards (to see that magnificient model , maybe /possibly Oriana). If you give him the big 'hurry up' , Yes Yes I'll tuck it under my arm & bring it home as hand luggage ready for 2017 ;)

Oh Pete!
Don't forget to book at least a seat and a half, possibly doubled on the plane, - with headroom enough for her mast, length to accommodate her bow, under as well as over the water - Sounds Fantastic, may I come too, please...? ;)
(Wouldn't it be better to go by ship - 'takes one to know one' - and put it on expenses  8)

Lachlan - how are the tenders?
Hoping very much that all's good with you.
By the way - will there be internal lighting on your magnificent QE2?
All the best, all around the world!

Hi all,

Pete sounds like an intrepid traveller!

I did some work on the model over the weekend. Forgot to take photos but will post some more next week.

While I was fiddling with the model I realised that it will not be finished by September 2017. The model is a hobby to build when I have an hour two to spare at the farm at the weekends. At the rate it is going I would have to work on it to orders of magnitude more than I do to have it finished in 15 months.

I found it hard to believe that my Oriana model was one of a very small number of such models in existence but QE2? There must be good largish-scale models around.

Hi all,

Some detail things starting to happen. First I have pretty much finished the mast. There's more detail than I thought, particularly as I rose to the challenge of doing the detail around the base of the mast which won't be seen anyway! The other model forced its way into one picture and the dog is showing very little interest in the other.

The other thing is that I have done the area round the suites each side of where the mast will be fitted. This was a good piece to get done and requires some more detailing yet but I'm happy to be making headway again.

Cheers for now - I hope those of you in the N hemisphere are enjoying your summer.

Hi all,
I have some developments to report: some big, some small. On the big side, I have had to do some surgery on the waterline near the bow to remove a 'hard-spot' on both sides and that means the whole model is being re-sanded and repainted. I will do the white topsides this time, so that will be an exercise in sanding, masking and spray-painting.
On the small side, I have half-made the forward crane and its base. In the picture, the outboard end of the boom was resting on a sticky-tape dispenser while I checked the height of the pedestal it sits on. Also done are the suites abaft the bridge and the railings to these are half-done, too. The bulkheads around the suites have yet to be trimmed and painted.
The various bulkheads around the funnel are done, and the railing stanchions have been roughed-in so they're half-done too. I have begun planking the Boat Deck and the tape along the edge of the Boat Deck noting the placing of the davits is just visible. The steps and the ramp around the after end of the accommodation are in place and I've started putting in the detail on the Boat Deck and the Boat Deck bulkhead. The collection of photos I have will allow me to have an educated guess at where the various windows, blanked-out windows, piping, vents, bench seats, lifeboat machinery and other things such as fire hydrants and boxes were located.
I'm reminded at the moment that these models go through a stage where lots of things are half-done, but as they do get finished the whole thing really starts to come together.
BTW, my wife Julie and I are starting to plan a trip away next year to attend the QE2 Anniversary in September next year.
Cheers for now and best regards,
Lachlan
