Very good idea and very good way for publicity !  But are there any local restrictions on holding a charity auction or raffle for an item ?  :)

There will be some rules and regulations, such as ring-fencing the monies, but I shouldn't think they are too onerous as people do that sort of thing quite frequently.

The event is in Glasgow therefore I think Rob or one of our other members from that area would be best placed to enquire with the relevant local authority ( it'll be the one that covers the area that includes the venue ) what the specific rules are in that location.

There will possibly be other regulations - such as Public Liability insurance as well as something relating to Sale of alcohol and betting regs
etc; these will already have been / or will be checked out as well.
The costs of the event will need to be covered - probably long before collecting for charity can be considered....
(Organising any event involves a huge amount of work - and collecting for anything retrospectively is usually much more difficult than collecting beforehand).

Indeed - it took a year of planning for each of my two big charity trips a few years ago.

Hi Peter and Rosie, thanks for your suggestion about a charity auction, which I have added to our good ideas list.

When booking the venue we were given details of restrictions, so we can check out these if we decide to go ahead with your idea.

As you have mentioned, our first priority is to find sponsors and sell tickets.  Should we have funds left over from the event we had intended to make a donation to a charity which we have identified.

We had a very successful committee planning meeting on 23 September.  John, Gavin and I meet every 3 months in Glasgow and it is amazing how much we manage to discuss in a couple of hours.  I have just completed the notes of the meeting (6 pages) and we will be busy over the next few months taking forward the actions.

Thanks again it is always good to hear your ideas.

We were pleased to see that Clydebank's local paper, the Clydebank Post has picked on on the story about our conference.

That is excellent, Lynda -- not just a little snippet announcing the event, but a proper article with a couple of interviews, including with yourself! Shows the efforts of the organising team are paying off.

We are pleased to announce that Professor David Humphreys will be speaking at the QE2 50-year conference next year. His first hand account of sailing with QE2 to the South Atlantic, at the time of the Falklands conflict, is a good addition to the conference programme.

Prof David Humphreys - QE2 and the1982 Falklands Conflict
Today David is professor of environmental policy at The Open University. Back in 1982, however, he had a very different occupation; as Senior Accounts Petty Officer onboard QE2. He was one of the volunteer crew who served on the ship when it was requisitioned for service in the South Atlantic. David’s talk will provide a first-hand account of what it was like to sail to war on QE2, as well as analysing the vital role that the ship played in the Falklands conflict.

Forum members will be able to purchase conference tickets from January 2017, so make sure you keep visiting the forum and look out for a special newsletter at the end of December with information on how to book.

Flyers and posters for the conference have been printed and next week will be sent out to maritime museums.

Committee member John Little has been putting his artistic skills to good use by designing an A5 flyer and A2 poster to advertise the conference.

We will let you know when the flyers are on The QE2 Story webpage for you to download to distribute to friends with an interest in QE2.
