They would start on battery automatically, upon loss of power. Air start is for when the batteries do not work, as the air compressor to fill the bottles was a small diesel compressor.

Port and starboard side between2 and 1 decks. ie deckhead of 2 deck

Pretty much the same area as QM2's pipes exit? I cant locate them on stern shots I've seen of QE2 which means they're hidden better on the older vessel!!

I am sure I have seen two pipes suspended from the between decks roof which looked like car exhausts with muffler boxes exiting over the stern

I'm guessing the exhaust is shown at the top of this photo, taken by me in Dubai in April 2011 ?

Very discreet, as I never recall seeing them - unlike QM2's!!

Carol had ideas of turning the ship into a livestock carrier, and she didn't want the sheep getting caught up in the mooring lines :D

Ah so they exit at the sides instead of right at the stern (a la QM2) !

Thanks Skilly - another mystery (well to me anyway) solved!

Only one ship - and Only the Engineers....
Thanks Guys, You have turned something that's been totally beyond my weedy brain into the best laugh in years.

Heading off to Count the Sheep for Carol.....
(Just wondering too, whether Mr J Paxman (lately of the BBC) will also find this topic interesting as he googles along...)

A couple of nights back I attended a presentation given by Hilton Jeffries, who was an engineer on QE2 for 25 years (Go On - Stop On! I have been on a job like that too).

Anyway, he has e-mailed me some photos of one of the Paxman emergency generators and the switchboard. The QE2's Paxmans are 11 years older than the engine in my previous post #4 below, and naturally aspirated, so the have a different inlet & exhaust manifold system.
Many thanks to Hilton for the photos.

Cheers
Skilly
