On a point of order - in that photo with the grey livery, is not that the T.T. Calshot I spy in the middle background?

Which makes it a highly appropriate picture for this forum, because one of those heavily involved in the preservation of the Calshot at Southampton is non other than a certain Terry Yarwood... :)

Yes it is Peter but not the one you're thinking of as the vessel pictured was operated by Southampton based Red Funnel until the late 1980s and is still service under the Spanish registry, where she is known as the Boluda Abrego IIRC

Great photo but does anyone know what these are called?  hawse pipes?

Hey Bob!
Guess what...on the Historic Ships website today, the selected letter for The Day is 'H'
and the following:
'hawse eye:
tubular metal fitting in the bows of a vessel through which the anchor cable passes'

It was nearly four years ago that we began this conversation!

Al the best to you and yours - Happy New Year,
And how's the workplace? Expect you are still hankering after flying desks!

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.
