Apologies if this has been asked before ............ can anyone enlighten me ............ in front of QE2's funnel, a white rectangular sloping box shape appeared. When was it added and what was it's purpose? (Sorry, I don't have any photographs on this device).

It's for additional air conditioning units for the penthouses. We do have a topic about it somewhere!

Many thanks for the link Isabelle but it's not It. The long oblong box slopes upwards towards the front of her funnel (Black mid section). I think Rob May be right, it could be for the penthouses air conditioning and must be a post 2000 refit addition. I have searched the forum but can not find anything related to this white box. Absolute loads about air conditioning though  :o

I remember talking with Louis about this structure and I'm pretty sure he said it was additional venting put in for the QG galley.

Michael mentions this structure in his list, but doesn't give its purpose.

Looking down from above, it is an oblong box on the flat (roof?) part of the forward superstructure, directly in front of the funnel. :)

Thank you for the links, interesting reading but not the right part. Looking down from above, it is an oblong box on the flat (roof?) part of the forward superstructure, directly in front of the funnel. :)

Hi and thank you - There are several members here who worked in the relevant area and will almost certainly know what it was specifically used for (unless they have forgotten!!)
Please, do you have time to search for an image online - and post a link...
Or will this wonderful image suffice (click the link below if you want to see a larger version)?

It looks as if it's immediately aft of the higher of the two RADAR 'globes', and directly over the three midships' penthouses ...is this correct?

Now that I'm home, and on an actual computer...

Michael Gallagher (Cunard's historian and QE2 expert bar none!) confirms that this box is additional air-conditioning, fitted in 2004 to prepare her for hew "new" role as a full time cruise ship.

I stood next to it in Dubai in 2011 (having enjoyed the amazing experience of walking all over the top of QE2!) which is why I was so sure about what it was.

Now, let me try and find that old topic... !

Hi Rob

Is the relevant information here?
It comes from Michael's Complete Listing of Changes

'2004 REFIT (1 – 22 May)

Structure on top deck

A new deck house was built above the Penthouse Suites on Signal Deck.

Funnel Bar Awning

A new awning was constructed aft of the funnel on Sun Deck to provide shelter for the new Funnel Bar.'

Jeez I did not even know about the funnel bar!
The Funnel Bar was the first public area on the ship that I ever learned about! I first saw it in one of the first QE2 videos I ever saw! :)
