I have booked tickets for the Waverley on 21 May 2015 for the sail down the Clyde to escort the QM2 from Greenock.

The original Waverley site information was that she would leave Glasgow at 16:00 and returns around 21:30.

However since then communication from Waverley office has confirmed a change in itinerary;

Quote
There has been a change to the timing of this trip due to changes in Cunard’s itinerary on the day.

To celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Cunard there will now be a fireworks display in Greenock and the QM2’s departure has been delayed until 10.30pm.

Waverley will now depart from Glasgow Science Centre at 7.30pm and return at midnight.

Whilst we will be able to offer you grandstand views of the fireworks and the QM2’s departure, it means that we will be unable to escort the liner as she leaves the Clyde

If any other forum members are onboard Waverley on that day it would be good to hear from you.

For the lucky forum members who are onboard QM2 I will give you a wave and lets hope there is lots of tooting of horns to celebrate!  :)

Hope there are lots of photo opportunities of both ships (and fireworks) to post on the forum.

Just a thought - would QM2 be the biggest ship ever in the Clyde?

Quite possible Peter!

Inverclyde Now has information on the ships calling at the port in 2014 and QM2 is certainly bigger than these ships.  http://www.inverclydenow.com/sp/11108-cruise-ships-visiting-greenock-2014

Hi Peter,

Certainly the largest passenger ship - there are larger tankers which berth at Finnart Oil Terminal in Loch Long.

QM2 doesn't sail until after the fireworks at 2230ish.

I have written to Waverley office to inform them that information from Cunard is that QM2 will not be leaving Greenock until the fireworks at 22.30 and told them that their timings mean the Waverley will be back in Glasgow by 21.30.

Unfortunately this doesn't surprise me Lynda unless this is a change to the originally billed time of departure (Waverley's May timetable has been out since Dec)

Although local website Inverclyde Now is stating she leaves at 1815, Peel Ports (the owner of Greenock Ocean Terminal) has her departure at 2200.

Incidentally I see her next call after Greenock is Oban? Is that correct? That would be an anchor port (obviously) but most ships anchor in the bay - I cant see the Mary doing that which means she would be on the other side of Kerrera out of view from the town.

Thanks Gav, I will post if I get a response about the Waverley.  The itinerary for QM2 says that she will be at anchor for the visit to Oban and I believe it will be a maiden port of call for Oban.  You are probably right that she will need to be at anchor outside the bay.

Pity QM2 isn't at Oban about about 9 days later - then Waverley could actually escort her as shes there too!!

I have received a response from the Waverley office to say that because of the change in Cunard's itinerary the Waverley will now leave Glasgow at 7.30 pm and although she will not escort QM2 out of the Clyde she will be there for the firework display.

I was a bit disappointed that the Waverley will not be escorting QM2 out of the Clyde as advertised but I still am still looking forward to the trip down the Clyde and the fireworks display and it will be different sailing back up the Clyde in the darkness.

I've just noticed the title - a Firewood Display? That's something different right enough!!

Auto-correct at its best I would imagine!!!
