QE2's stern
« on: Dec 21, 2014, 07:53 AM »
It's always interesting to know what goes on inside, hopefully no-one will mind my asking yet more questions!
From this image, it looks as if there are two mooring decks.

How far does it reach, both forward as well as down - in other words - where does it begin?!
Holy Nougat, Rod and Skilly and all - did you have to work and inspect down there?
The noise must have been huge.
Were there Crew cabins near to the props - or was the 'end' space used for holds, ballast and bunkers as well as engine machinery etc
Thanks so much to you Guys!
Rosie

(PS - Isabelle, so good that we can keep the Topic - thank you, please free to change the title, edit etc)

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

Yes there was a small mooring deck on 3 deck aft as well. Mostly taken up by the stern anchor. Below that was the chain locker. I confess I did not venture there much.
4,5,and 6 deck aft was crew cabins. Very noisy and vubrated alot, especially when going astern!

There's a superb photo of two helicopters on the stern deck posted on Facebook
When the details are known, hopefully the image can be posted here on the Forum's Falklands page(?).
In the meantime, take a look here

I'd suspect it's on the way back as she's showing distinctive rust streaks, but she didn't bring the whirlybirds back so it equally probably not long after setting off.  The sun angle is right for a northerly course in early / mid afternoon as this is the southern hemisphere we are talking about.

I would definitely say on the way back. Reason being we did not carry Wessex helicopters down south, only Sea Kings. Those helos are air sea rescue helos. Also the deck space on Quarter deck and Upper deck is completely clear.

On Two Deck is the mooring lines plus the pool tank and other bits and pieces
On Three Deck is the capstans locker room plus a small open crew deck the cabins here are only for females.
Four and Five Deck Aft are all crew cabins
On Six Deck Aft is also crew cabins but not that aft as the ones on Four and Five

Good to actually see a rudder in the photos & drawings.
The beautiful solid glass 3D image of the QE2 that was given to the crew members on the final voyage had the rudder missing!

This is just So beautiful!
The simplicity / 'no fuss' about QE2 is something just so valuable,
hopefully this can be appreciated for many years to come.

The Stern

Fascinating to look at that.  I stood in the steering gear room in Dubai, which was amazing, just that one part of the ship looked so incredibly complex, and I stood alongside the propeller shaft too.  I hadn't realised I must have gone up/down stairs in between times though.  Oh to be able to go back and do that all again...
