John Plews QE2 Cruise staff 1972-1975
« on: Jul 07, 2014, 02:09 PM »
hi forum, I'm a new member, John Plews, and I was part of the Cruise Staff team 1972 -75. I would like to know if anyone was on-board on 1st April 1974 when QE2 broke down in the Bermuda Triangle. If so do you have any pictures? I was on-board throughout the entire episode but have no photographs  -  the rescue of passengers by the Island Venture, the tugs that took QE2 back to Bermuda  -  any photographs that you could share would be great  -  thanks.

Hi John
And Welcome - It's great that you have joined us!
There's more about here about the breakdown that you might find interesting too.

When time allows, it will be really good to hear something of your own QE2 Story - I guess that 'back in the day' there were some amusing as well as interesting happenings on board - looking forward to more!
All the best
Rosie

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

Hello John

Welcome to the forum and I hope you have success finding photos of the event in 1974.  It would be wonderful to hear about your memories of your time onboard QE2.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Hi Rosie  Thanks for the link to the 2012 chat re the 74 breakdown, lots of interesting stuff about the tech problems, I could probably write a book about the incident and I still have my "I survived the Bermuda Triangle" T-shirt! However firstly I must oil the memory. From the 2012 forum contributions I've now learnt it was the Sea Venture which took the QE2 passengers back to Bermuda (not as I thought the Island Venture) but I think that ship later became the Island Princess and is now the MV Discovery. The ship is currently chartered to the "Cruise & Maritime" company. More later and I hope there are other survivors of '74 out there somewhere!!
