Favourite Liners and Ships
« on: Apr 17, 2014, 04:48 PM »
Hello All

I was woundering which ships were people's favourites? I have listed quite a few ships above however if your favourite is none of those, please state which (I am also happy to add any suggestions to the poll). If you feel like it perhaps tell us your top 5 or 10 ships?

It is quite difficult to make a list, or at least I found it difficult. It was a tough decision between Queen Elizabeth (lizzie) and the QE2 for first place. For me it may be easer for me to just list all of the ships I like (well most of them are transatlantic liners).

I have voted for my top three and if I had to give my top ten they would be: (in this order)

QE2
Queen Elizabeth
Queen Mary
Sylvania
Kungsholm
Carinthia
Lucitania
Aquitania
Saxonia
Transaal Castle

I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

A lot that I like. I obviously have too many favourites and I completely forgot about RMS Transvaal Castle. :)

I just voted too !  And it is difficult to even narrow it down to 10 ships.  But even though I do like a number of ships, not one is in the same league as QE2 for me.  June   :)

Agreed. I had to change my list, I've swapped the QE2 and lizzie round now. The QE2 will always be on top!

Voted, and not in the slightest bit ashamed to say QE2,Queen Mary and SS France (though i never sailed on her) but what about the little old Stefan Batory, she also sailed the Atlantic, and was a serious contender for me to try as well..But my list would be
QE2
Queen Mary
Stefan Batory
SS France
Vistafjord (my first ship visit)
SS United States
Titanic
Sagafjord
the rest dont get a look in  ;)
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

Hi Myles - I didn't really know much about Stefan Batory, and after having 'googled' her, she really is a pretty ship.

1 SS/MV Queen Elizabeth 2
2 RMS Queen Mary
3 RMS Queen Elizabeth
4 SS Rotterdam
5 PS Waverley
6 MS Kungsholm (now Veronica)
7 SS United States
8 SS Normandie
9 RMS Queen Mary 2
10 HMY Britannia

SS Rotterdam taught me so much about how a ship hotel can work, and how you can fall in love with a ship that you never saw in service, if she's preserved correctly.  She's also really sleek and lovely looking, and the actual hotel is truly wonderful, and gave us a great deal!

Going aboard RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach was one of the most spine-tingling moments of my life.  I loved every minute.  She's a treasure.  If only they'd appreciate her a bit more...  imagine how she'd look all lit up in her old berth in New York...

PS Waverley is lovely, and its a wonder she still sails.  Use her or lose her, people.

SS United States - why can nobody save America's awesome flagship?  At least give her an exterior overhaul before its too late... a fascinating ship, answering a question (speed) that no longer needed an answer... so wrong, but so right.

RMS QM2 - I can only describe her as a disappointment, on board, after QE2, and simply too big, but she's awesome, attractive in places, and the only ship I'd cross the Atlantic on, if I could afford to...

Kungsholm lives!  QE2 v1 ?  in some ways better than QE2... I'd love to learn more about her, and to visit her.  She should be back in Clydebank!

Britannia - I excitedly visited her when she opened, but for some reason she left me cold and I've never returned even though she's 1 hour away.  Perhaps it the truly terrible way she's presented - behind a shopping mall, with a hideous carbunkle glued to her top.

Not at all interested in -

Titanic or her sisters. She wasn't a remarkable ship at all, except for sinking, and nobody would remember her now if she hadn't sunk.

Any modern cruise ship

I had to do a top 20. Mine are (The list changes):

1. Queen Mary
2. United States
3. Queen Elizabeth 2 (Or Rotterdam)
4. Rotterdam (Or QE2 or QM2)
5. Queen Mary 2 (Or Rotterdam)
6. Kungsholm
7. Eugenio C.
8. Ivernia
9. Funchal
10. Windsor Castle
11. Canberra
12. Augustus
13. Statendam
14. Southern Cross
15. Oriana
16. Victoria (Union-Castle, Incres, Chandris, Louis)
17. Stella Solaris, Athena (TIE)
18. Leonardo Da Vinci
19.  America
20. Olympia, Arion (TIE)

Strangely, I voted QM2 instead of QE2 or Rotterdam even though I like them more. I'm sailing on QM2 for my first time so I decided just in case my list changes...

These are my favourite ships that I have enjoyed :

QE2
Vistafjord / Caronia / Saga Ruby
Rotterdam
Marco Polo
Hikawa Maru
Bohuslän

One container liner that I was allowed to visit, and her new larger sisters that I would very much like to see too (both of them the largest container ships in their day) :

Emma Maersk (and her sisters, particularly Ebba)
Maersk McKinsey Møller (and her sisters)

Three ships I would love to see and try :

Hebridean Princess
Le Boréal
Liemba

Rob:
Some points to consider from your post of this morning.
RMS QM - it best that she's in Long Beach as she is the big fish in the small pond out there. It seems they have gotten their act together in maintaining her and keeping her as a hotel and museum. She's one of a kind in LA which out there is a big deal.  If she had been moored in NYC, she would have been long gone by now and she never would have been berthed in her old berth as the Ocean Passenger Terminal is still being used for passenger ships of a certain tonnage. The newer Cunarders use the Brooklyn terminal because QM2 draws too much and would endanger the Lincoln Tunnel in the Hudson River to use the OPT on Manhatten's upper west side.
SS United States - it all comes down to money. In 1990, I was allowed aboard the US when it was mothballed in Newport News, Va. At that time, its interior was mostly intact(except for furnishings which had been auctioned) and it could have been reasonably restored to reflect its heyday times.
I was aboard her last September with a group of potential investors. A difference of night and day! She is GUTTED inside and it is nearly impossible to make out where the public rooms even were. Just tunnels of metal throughout. Such a shame as different plans were executed halfway and then stopped as the money ran out and left to the next investor to begin again. I think it would need tens of millions to restore her and I don't see that ever happening. (At least QE2 is intact at present!)
RMS Olympic - From our age and sailing experience, I can understand your observations, but as I read through the journals of my great grandfather and my grandfather,  the Olympic was to them as QE2 is to us.
They didn't like Cunarders because they felt them to be too bare bones compaired to the White Star flagship. They traveled first cabin and did most of their transAtlantics on Olympic and, interestingly, believed it better after Olympic converted from coal to oil (history repeating don't you think?). One further note - I found that they were prebooked to sail on the Titanic in the summer of 1912.
Modern cruise ships - We are of the same thinking - YUK!

I should have mentioned the reason for my choice of ships, which I am sure you have guessed was because they were built in John Brown's.  My father had worked on many ships built in John Brown's but my choice includes the ships that I can remember him talking about when I was young, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, QE2, Sylvania, Kungsholm, Carinthia, Saxonia and Transvaal Castle.  I had the opportunity to see around the QE2, Sylvania and Transvaal Castle when they were fitted out and before they left the shipyard.   My grandfather had worked on the Aquitania and my great grandfather had worked on the Lucitania.

Another ship that should not be forgotten is the RMS Carpathia, built by Swan Hunter and the role she played in rescuing passengers from the Titanic.

Here are the reasons for my choices.

SS/TSMV Queen Elizabeth 2 is a beautiful ship, she was fast and extremely well engineered. She has an amazing history and at the time she must have been a very different and thoroughly modern ship.

RMS Queen Elizabeth (Lizzie) & RMS Queen Mary The two sisters were magnificant ships. At the time the fastest and biggest passenger ships ever built if I am correct. I prefer QE or QM just because for some reason which I do not know, I prefer the two funnels, and the slightly diifferent bow shape (not really very noticeable).

SS Rotterdam Well, just look at her. What a beautiful ship - her bridge in particular.

SS United States The fastest ship to cross the Atlantic and must have been very beautiful back in her heyday.

RMS Queen Mary 2 She is a brilliant piece of engineering and I hope she lives the long special life that our QE2 lived.

RMS Titanic/Olympic I say RMS Titanic but I actually prefer the Olympic. Olympic and Titanic were beautiful ships and I loved the architecture inside. The Olympic had a nice long life and has some interesting history.

SS Eugenio C She was quite fast, and I really liked her stern and her twin funnels (they almost remind me of SS Rotterdams).

Vistafjord/Saga Ruby & Sagafjord/Saga Rose They were both very nice ships and I really liked the interiors. They were 'Mini QE2s'.

SS France/Norway The QE2's rival once upon a time. I always liked her shape and those funnels were amazing. Surely that's where Carnival took their funnel design from? It's a shame that she was changed when she became the Norway.

Thanks for reading. Took me quite a while to think of how to write this up. - Adam  ;D

EUGENIO C. has always been one of my favorites. It is a shame how her final years were spent rusting before being driven onto a beach.

SS QE2 sounds nice.  RMS QE2 sounds nice, even though she was not a RMS.

But to me, QE2 is such a personality, that she does not need a title.

Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) simply says it all.   :)

My favorites are:
1. SS United States
2. SS/MV Queen Elizabeth 2
3. RMS Queen Elizabeth
4. RMS Queen Mary
5. SS France (1961)
6. SS Empress of Canada (1961)
7. SS Independence/ SS Constitution
8. Olympic Class
9. RMS Aquitania
10. SS Rotterdam

Makes sense to me. The SS United States and the Queen Mary are always switching for my number one spot.

Thanks for sharing Adam. :)

Interesting how you prefer Queen Elizabeth to Queen Mary. I prefer Queen Elizabeth too. She looked nicer and tider than the Queen Mary.

I agree. I love the Queen Mary, but the Queen Elizabeth took lessons from Normandie, while keeping a similar outward and almost identical inward appearance. The 2 internally braced funnels, open bridge wings, and absence of ventilators gave Lizzie a cleaner, more modern, look.

There is a photo of the QE and Normandie during their brief time together in NYC (after the Queen Mary left them). It shows some of the similarities.

Two of the most beautiful liners ever built then! :) And of course, our QE2 is also one of/if not the prettiest liner ever built.  ;D

Indeed. Much prettier than those boxes floating around in the Caribbean as we speak.

Definately. Normandie, QE2 and QE are the prettiest liners ever built. But then again, most liners are good looking unlike the Monstrosities of the Seas modern cruise ships.  ;)

First selections are driven by design features rather than the heart:

1. Lusitania (first real ocean greyhound - turbines instead of reciprocating machinery)
2. Normandie (turbo electric - same type of propulsion as post '86 QE2 except steam turbines instead of diesels driving the generator, modern hull design compared to rivals)
3. QE2 (propulsion was pretty conventional propulsion wise but there were various novel and unique for the time design features - not least her function in the marketplace)

Second selections are driven by the heart (sorry folks - they're all Clydebuilt!):

1. QE2 (simply the best!)
2. Queen Elizabeth (slightly better looking than QM and had the most arduous sea trials of any ship ever built I would think!)
3. Aquitania (the last of the Edwardian style four stackers and oh that counter stern! http://www.magnoliabox.com/art/506617/Stern_view_of_the_Aquitania_1914_in_drydock)

Off topic, but I also think the counter sterns are quite beautiful.

I actually kind of like Oriana's design. There are several modern cruise ships that look quite good. The 1995 Oriana and Aurora of P&O, HAPAG-Llyod's Europa and Europa 2, and all four Disney cruise line ships.

Oriana isn't that bad, but the general consensus is that she is ugly. Definitely not as beautiful as Canberra, though.

For some reason the Canberra's design doesn't interest me at all.  :-\

I can't say I ever found Canberras looks appealing either. I met up with her several times during my time at sea and don't think I even took a photo of her in all that time. I suppose by that stage I had been spoiled by QE2.
Don't just be part of her past, be part of her history!

I'm not the only one then. For some reason the Canberra has just never appealed to me.

I find Oriana's much more interesting. I do like Canberra, but I understand why you don't like her design.

Oriana's stern doesn't really appeal to me either, however I do think it is a very interesting and original design.  :)

I, too, never found Canberra's looks appealing.  She was dearly loved by many.  But after seeing QE2, to me, all ships pale in comparison.

QE2 - the ship for all of time, a ship of timeless beauty !

I had to do a top 20. Mine are (The list changes):

1. Queen Mary
2. United States
3. Queen Elizabeth 2 (Or Rotterdam)
4. Rotterdam (Or QE2 or QM2)
5. Queen Mary 2 (Or Rotterdam)
6. Kungsholm
7. Eugenio C.
8. Ivernia
9. Funchal
10. Windsor Castle
11. Canberra
12. Augustus
13. Statendam
14. Southern Cross

16. Victoria (Union-Castle, Incres, Chandris, Louis)
17. Stella Solaris, Athena (TIE)
18. Leonardo Da Vinci
19.  America
20. Olympia, Arion (TIE)

Strangely, I voted QM2 instead of QE2 or Rotterdam even though I like them more. I'm sailing on QM2 for my first time so I decided just in case my list changes...

3. Queen Elizabeth 2 (Or Rotterdam)
4. Rotterdam (Or QE2 or QM2)
5. Queen Mary 2 (Or Rotterdam)
6. Kungsholm
7. Eugenio C.

My choice is
Qe2 best ocean liner of all time
Qm2 best ocean liner or ship afloat
Qe was the best ocean liner
But each and every ship has its own character and cant be compared to another.

Yes, the Normandie from French line.
