Iconic Crew Portrait Marks Queen Mary 2’s 10th birthday in Sydney

More than 120 individuals from the many crew on board Queen Mary 2 came together in Sydney today for a dramatic portrait to mark the Cunard liner’s 10th birthday.

The striking shot, by internationally-acclaimed photographer James Morgan, captures crew from every one of Queen Mary 2’s broad spectrum of roles – from gentlemen dance hosts and housekeepers to the kennel master and florist – to create an iconic representation of the Cunard on board experience and the people who make it happen.

Props featured in the shoot range from dogs for the kennel master through to a double bass and a harp for the liner’s musicians and a large frozen sculpture for the resident ice carver.

Since her memorable first visit to Sydney in February 2007, when eager spectators gridlocked the city and brought traffic to a halt, Queen Mary 2 has become a firm favourite with Australians, turning heads with every visit. Her call in Sydney today, her ninth to date, comes at the start of her second circumnavigation of the country, a 23-night roundtrip voyage which will see her visit seven ports around Australia.

Queen Mary 2 Captain Kevin Oprey said the photo shoot was a grand way to celebrate Queen Mary 2’s 10th birthday and to honour the unsung heroes who make the world’s most famous ocean liner tick:
“Australia has become Queen Mary 2’s home away from home and it’s a really special place to celebrate the ship’s tenth birthday in such a spectacular fashion,” Captain Oprey said.

Cunard Marketing Director Angus Struthers, in Sydney for the event, said:

“Australians have really taken Queen Mary 2 to their hearts and now rank as the fourth largest source of guests for Cunard globally. Queen Mary 2 is the benchmark of international cruising luxury and with today’s photo call her crew has made a huge statement about why people right around the world love this ship so much.”

At 151,400 tonnes and with 1310 staterooms, a soaring six-storey Grand Lobby, the largest ballroom and library at sea, the three-storey 1347-seat Britannia Restaurant and Illuminations, the first planetarium at sea, Queen Mary 2 remains unchallenged as the most famous passenger ship in operation today.

In her ten years at sea, Queen Mary 2 has:

·        Sailed the equivalent of three times to the moon and back
·        Served more than 58 million meals, enough to feed the combined population of Sydney, Hong Kong, Cape Town, Rio and Dubai for an entire weekend
·        Looked after tea lovers with 21.9 million cups of tea, enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools
·        Baked 2.7 million scones, which if stacked on top of each other would reach a soaring 80km in height.

Queen Mary 2 will return home to Southampton on 9 May where her 10th birthday celebrations will continue. All three ships of the Cunard fleet will arrive together in their homeport of Southampton and sister ships Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth will salute the flagship’s first ten years. The day will feature special sail-pasts, a celebratory lunch and a spectacular send-off of fireworks as all three ships set sail together from Southampton that evening, with Queen Mary 2 leading the way.

Nice piece Rob - now Cunard - how about one of those whole crew (or almost) shots as done on QE2 a few times?

Great article and pictures, Rob !  Thanks for posting them.  Gav, good idea !  I have not seen an all crew photo from QM2 such as the impressive QE2 photos.
QE2 - the ship for all of time, a ship of timeless beauty !
