Prompted by this discussion I have started re-reading the book I wrote (which I forgot I copyrighted and have a Library of Congress reference for - although I did do a minor re-write to improve the flow of the English and book)... maybe now is the time to get a new perspective of what it took to build the ship out there.... For those interested the data base I developed registered a total of 12,711 inspections were carried out during the build.

Hi John -

I agree with Myles.  Your knowledge and experience is more than amazing and there indeed would be a huge readership, who would be interested in every thought and every last detail that you could write.

Have tonight just booked a cabin for our first cruise on QM2, so I had better order a copy of this book to see what I am letting myself in for.

Should be very enjoyable voyage - having now retired (for the second time - the last attempt was a failure as a previous employer invited me back to one of my favourite ships for two weeks - which eventually became two years before I managed to get off again last May), I don't have to pack uniform, overalls, or PPE, and if the lights go out and the ship's progress slows, I can just roll over and go back to sleep while someone else looks after the problem!!

Roll on July 13th.

Cheers,
Skilly

Great to hear from you, Skilly !

I hope you and your family are well, and how is the little "Chief Engineer" doing !

Do you have any plans to go back to sea if the call comes ?

And please take lots of photos on QM2, especially "mechanical" things if you have the opportunity !

Hi June,

Got two 'little engineers' now, however, I suspect one is destined for higher things!
The other one has already done his first 2.5 months on the 'Aurora' and will be re-joining next month - probably have 2 years sea time in before he even starts school!

Definitely won't be packing my work bags again - my ticket is good till 2020 but my body isn't.

Probably won't be getting any mechanical space photos on QM2 either - her Hayne's Manual is already done, and I wont know anyone on board. All I have seen is the build docos .

It's now 49 years since I first went to sea, and I have still not managed to do a TA. This trip will be another tick on my bucket list, as will the Oshkosh Airshow at the other end, then we drive route 66 from Chicago to L.A., spend a couple of nights on Queen Mary during a week in California, then fly home again.

Cheers,

Skilly

Hi Skilly -

Thanks very much for your message and I hope you and your family are well.  That is awesome that you now have two "little chief engineers".  Awesome that Engineer 1 already has sea time !

We will look forward to all photos that you take and post.

I have the manual and I think there are a few photos mis-labeled and credited incorrectly.

Have a wonderful TA and the rest of your trip sounds great too !
