QE2 - Lifespan Compared Other Cunard Ships.
« on: Jan 31, 2014, 04:28 PM »
In the timeline topic there is a brief discussion on where QE2's Cunard service ranks in the whole fleet
Timeline Topic Link.

I thought it of interest to look at where she ranks in a lifespan league.  At present QE2 just squeezes into the top ten but will move-up the table certainly within the next 12 months.  However there is a very long way to go to surpass the current leader.

Attached is a listing of all those vessels with 40+ years from build to "end-of-life".  You may also note some unusal names, this is because I am considering the whole of Cunard Steam-Ship Co. Ltd., which includes associated company records.

Very interesting, thank you!

Yes, Parthia had a very long life at 85.9 years, having been built in 1870 and broken up in 1956 as "Straits Maru".

However, according to Peter Newall's "Cunard Line, A Fleet History" and Duncan Haws' "Merchant Fleets - Cunard Line", it seems that Hecla had an even longer career spanning 94 years, from 1860 to 1954.

Still some years to go for Queen Mary and QE2...

Thank QE2forever,

I double checked and found the error in my list, I had no completion date for Hecla which is what I 've used as the starting point.  I have replaced the original attachment with a new file.

There is also one further vessel which I have excluded from my list, it is one of the Burns' fleet which had a lifespan of 102 years, but as yet no evidence to incorporate it into Cunard.

Thanks for posting this insight into the longevity of ships and how QE2 compares. I was amazed at the lifespan of the Hecla and see that QE2 has a long way to go.

In the history of ships there are so many variables of information, of which I can think of only a few.
Total lifespan of a ship
Lifespan broken down by companies who owned the ship
Lifespan at sea

Would be interesting to see how QE2 compares to other ships in relation to service at sea

You have compiled a fantastic piece of research.

Thanks Lynda appreciate the feedback.  You are right about the permutations and intepretations of the data but it is part of the fascination.

As an interesting aside all the ships that are ahead of QE2 in longevity list all have the majority of their careers outside of Cunard service.  Only Aleppo, currently on par with QE2, has a longer Cunard service life.

Yes, this is very interesting indeed.  Another comparison might be which ships have continued to the end of their careers or are still alive and keeping their original name.
