Background:
Born:  Sunderland 1955
Education:  Monkwearmonth Grammar School ; Fleetwood’s Nautical College for pre-sea boys

Navy Career:
1972: Navigating Cadet with BP Tanker Company
1976:  Joined Hullgates Shipping of Grimsby
1985: Studied for Masters Certificate at South Shields College
1987: Joined Cunard as 2nd Officer onboard QE2
1989:  1st Officer onboard Cunard Princess
1991:  1st Officer on QE2
1994:  promoted to Chief Officer on QE2
1996: Chief Officer on Sea Goddess II
1999: Staff Captain on QE2
2001: Master of Sea Goddess I
2002/03: Master of Caronia. He arrived onboard and completed his 'Safety Training' but before he could assume command he was appointed as Master of QE2.
2003: Master of QE2 as of 17 April 2003
2006:  Captain of Sun Princess
2008:  Master onboard QE2 for her final voyage to Dubai
2009: Took command of Queen Victoria
2010:  Assumed command of Seabourn Spirit in February 2010
2011: Deputy Master of  Trinity House as from November 2011
2019: Captain McNaught to be awarded CVO in 2019
2023: Retires from position as Deputy Master of Trinity House as from 31 December 2023
2024: Captain McNaught honoured with a Knighthood in the Kings Birthday honours list 2024

Awards:

On 17 July 2013 Captain McNaught was awarded the Dr Winterbottom Fellowship Awards at South Tyneside College, South Shields, England

The awards, named in honour of the college’s 19th-century founder, Thomas Winterbottom, were established in 2011 and are given in recognition of contribution to the college, South Tyneside or the Marine Industry.
