MV Queen Elizabeth refit 2014
« on: Apr 26, 2013, 09:36 AM »
I've noticed from the latest Cunard brochure that QE departs from Southampton following her World Cruise, on the 9/5/2014 for Hamburg.  There are no further voyages until the 8/6/2014.  I presume this is to allow for her first refit, although being nearly a month out of service does appear a longer than normal time. Also the time of year is also not the norm.

Can anyone add anything?

Could it be a charter? Cunard refits, from the mid 70's, tended to be done in the bleak midwinter in some of the coldest yards on the planet. :(

It's for refit.

The last three QE2 refits were in April / May as the warmer weather made it easier to strip and repainted her hull.

On another note can anybody please confirm the date Cunard took delivery of QE There are conflicting dates on Wikipedia & a Cunard site (4th October 2010 & the 30th October the later being impossible as she was named on the 11th Oct)

Neither date appears correct, she departed Monfalcone on 30/9/10 which is the date she was handed over from the builders.

Information on page 12  in Maurizio Eliseo's book "Queen Elizabeth More than a ship" states that at 10:25 on 30th September 2010 the President and CEO of Carnival UK signed his name on the official delivery document.  On page 18 there is information to state that the ship set sail from the shipyard at 4 pm on 30 September.

Have just returned from Southampton's celebrations for QM2's 10th birthday - it was a wonderful day!

Yes, QE is going for a three week refit.  She sailed from Southampton on Friday night for Hamburg, then going to, I think, Oslo and then back to Hamburg for her refit.  She is back in Southampton on 4th June with Ruby Princess and I am hoping to get to see them there.

Quite a number of her cruises this year are Fly/Cruises where she will be based elsewhere and I see from an advert in Saturday's Southern Daily Echo that 4 of her cruises from September to November will also be Fly/Cruises to Eastern and Central Mediterranean.  So I don't think she will be visiting Southampton much this year.

NEWS:  VIDEO CLIP SHOWS TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCES OF MULTI-MILLION POUND REFIT ABOARD CUNARD’S QUEEN ELIZABETH

Cunard courts solo travellers with creation of Single Staterooms

A new 4 minute video tells the story of the recent multi-million pound refit that took places aboard Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth, creating nine new single staterooms, laying over 25,000 square metres of carpeting, replacing over 3,000 mattresses, installing 1,200 flat screen TVs, adding new awnings on the sun decks, re-modelling the Lido restaurant and Royal Arcade shopping area, and on the technical side, replacing a 65 tonne alternator.

Over 20 days in May and June, 950 contractors worked with ship’s staff around the clock to complete the work at the Blohm+Voss yard in Hamburg, drinking 54,300 cups of coffee, over 35,000 cups of tea and 9,000 litre bottles of water, and consuming over 80,000 meals – with 13,500 sachets of tomato sauce - over the duration of the 265,000 man-hour project.

Recognising the increasing popularity of solo travel, eight outside and one inside staterooms have been added to the ship and are on sale now, available for booking beginning with the 16 December 2014 sailing (voyage number Q422).

The single staterooms measure 159-162 square feet with features including:
·        Ideal central location, mid-ships in close proximity to the social areas of the Empire Casino, the Royal Court Theatre and the Queens Room
·        Small double bed with generous width of over 47” (120cm)
·        Large windows giving plenty of natural daylight and excellent views (outside staterooms only)

Other innovations made possible by the refit include waiters with insulated coffee and tea pots henceforth serving passengers with hot drinks at all meals, following the refurbishment of the ship’s informal Lido restaurant.  The addition of recessed risers will improve the styling of this self service area as well as passenger flows within it.

More generally, carpets have been renewed and large flat-screen TVs – mostly 32” or above – have been installed in all passenger staterooms.  Sun awnings have been erected on the open area near the Lido pool at the stern on deck 9 and on both sides of the Grills Upper Terrace area near the top of the ship to offer more shade out on deck. The creation of a dedicated studio enables the ship’s photographers to offer high-end portraiture while the addition of touch screens in the photo gallery continues the development of a digital environment in which passengers can more easily find and select photos taken of them by the team.

Shopping in the Royal Arcade on deck 3 has been transformed: new Fine Jewellery and Watch shops have opened and the layout, lighting and overall shopping experience for passengers has been enhanced.

On the technical front, scrubber technology has been installed in line with the company’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact. This involves the installation of a new filtration system for the exhaust gas from the ship’s engines.   In addition, a new alternator has been installed.

Technical Figures:
Queen Elizabeth
Length:        294 m
Width:        32 m
Draught:        8 m
Maximum Speed:        23.7 knots
Passenger Capacity:        2,068
Crew:        1,005
- Ends –

Yes, they do seem to have very short memories. As far as I remember a good portion of five deck on QE2 was single cabins.

Sadly its typical, if it doesnt concern them, then they are not interested
You ask any single person who booked a single cabin on QE2, and we ALL have tales to tell, Now as for the twin beds or double beds we care not a hoot.. ;)
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!
